LawDog - you can be both. The light and the dark, the gentleman and the killer. The trick is to separate the two. One is who you are. One is what you do.

Some people think this is what they want to do, but it's no TV show, and you don't always catch the bad guy or win the gunfight. Touching evil and living in the dark makes you appreciate the the good and the light. Knowing your own darkness is the best method for dealing with the darkness of others. The biggest fish swim in the darkest waters.

Heady days, and unforgettable memories traded for the 1,000 small deaths of the sensible man.

    Brother....THAT...right there

I will say there was a day when truly I could not lose a gunfight or a fistfight. Never. It wasn't true...I don't think...but fuck!

Success breeds success. And yeah...the heady days of jeans and raid jackets, Eagle nylon and Point Blank Armor...and rams and Crown Vics...and sawed off shotguns. Its a strange feeling being immortal...even if it is only a temporary illusion that you think is real...but the more it is real, the more it is real. And like a drug, more powerful than any other, you chase that elephant because you deserve to chase it and catch it...you earned it and you want more.

You won't see the sensible man feeling that...you won't see the responsible man feeling Roosevelt's wolf rising in the heart. Even now so many years later it still gives me chills. We were there...we did those things.

But that drug changes you. Not in a bad way. It just keeps you from relating to the protected people ever again. You walk among them, but are not like them,,,nor will you ever be. Some people can handle that and others can't. I wrote some years ago about "moving like a ghost in the land of the living". It is like that. The groanings and strivings of the common human seem so trivial and small afterwards.

Sadly, sometimes its a poorly chosen spouse. Mine saw me for what I was early on and stuck around. When a woman sees you giggle as you choke somebody in a parking lot into sleep...and doesn't run...you have something. A woman that marries Beaver Cleaver the insurance salesman and one day wakes up to Ragnar Lothbrock in bloody chainmail the next is horrified.

In the words of the late great G Gordon Liddy..."I became the man I wanted to be".

I am sitting here in my 4000 SF home, with my beautiful wife...who knows it all and has seen me angrier than Satan, kinder than any angel, and...seen me cry (something no living man has ever beheld). I am drinking a fresh squeezed OJ and Titos by the fire. The dog by my side, a Rolex Two Tone Sub on my wrist, and all in the world is right and just...because I have made it thus...because the things I learned swimming in deep dark and bloody waters have taught me HOW to make it so.

Thanks for this insight, the same I've heard from most warriors who've been there done that. Same for me with the Fire Services.
