Freedom yes, but experiences are better. They are the seasoning that makes one appreciate the freedom won by artfully prevailing in those times. When one can say with a defiant confidence that unmakes other men, "Yes, we were there...we did those things". And most often in those quiet moments by the fire, when something remind us of the times on the edge, and we smile that ever silent smile that some will never wear.

One thing to keep in mind is that it could be a BS story in order to drive people from the department and cause other issues. Propaganda and stuff like that.

That image was LASD OSS (Operation Safe Streets). I had the privilege to work with them when I was assigned as the gang officer in my watch at IRC. OSS made LAPD's CRASH look like cookie selling girl scouts, but without the fanfare. I modeled our own Gang Unit after the LASD OSS.

All warrior souls lust for rushing headlong into battle against the enemies of good alongside their brothers. What the administrations fear is that the loyalty between brothers, and to the unit, (and it becomes a powerful thing indeed) surpasses loyalty to the department. And it almost becomes uncontrollable for them. Politically aspiring Chiefs and Sheriffs do not want safe streets or the suppression of criminal gangs - they say they do but it is bullshit - what they want deep down is achieve their own aspirations, and the thing that will give them that is the illusion of those things.

The suppression of criminal gangs is not done with enforcement, it is done with fear. The true and tangible attainment of safe streets and the suppression of criminal gangs, takes semi-outlaw tribes within the agency...the police equivalent of the old Mac-V-Sog...that will accomplish the mission at hand. When I was in the Gang Unit, drive by shootings decreased by 90% because they knew that evil men in raid jackets would chase them down and shotgun them to death while their cars were still rolling without so much as a "freeze police".

We were arrogant, and walked with a swagger, but damn if we weren't good at what we did. But what those units have the potential to become frightens the brass more than anything.
