Just seen a Maverick 88 for sale. Are they any good, or am I better off waiting for a 500 or a Rem 870? Thanks in advance.

Mark, the 88 is the bargin basement 500 made in Mexico for Mossberg,, the safety is different, but unless your left handed it doesn't make any diference,, the barrels will interchange. . THey used to come like the 500 of old with just once action rod pump handle, not sure if they have gone to the double bar set up.

ALl in all a good gun for the money

Bought it. Is it worth putting any extra bits on it? I saw Knoxx do replacement stocks. Also, can I assume a Mossberg 500 heat shield will fit? Are they worth adding?

I have a Mossburg 500 for hunting and a Maverick 88 as low cost house/truck gun. It has not let me down the 10 years I've had it. As Dave pointed out, the safety is the only difference between the two. The stock and barrel interchange. My 88 has two action bars the same as my 500.
