My wrestling coaches and my drill sergeants probably did the most for me over any martial arts instructor as it pertains to mindset.
In wrestling practice, we have a match (fight) coming up. If we relaxed too much, we would lose. If we did not fight hard enough, we would lose. Coach would push us hard, but right. He would say everything right without coming right out and saying to lose is to die - which I truly believe was his mindset and it carried our team to first place in what was the same as state. Our drill sergeants in OSUT (basic and infantry school) took it to that next level of life or death. When I go to work, drive, shop, etc. I apply more of what they taught as opposed to any form/kata type of stuff I learned in the dojos. Not down playing the dojos, just that the mindset factor was not there anywhere near the same. |
