Glad you got it fixed.

The most common thing is that people do not get the spring/guide rod assembly exactly in the cutout on the barrel the way it is supposed to go. If it is not sitting exactly flush in the groove, then it won't go back together easily.

But that obviously was not the problem here.

True indeed. And even if just separating slide & frame to "look around" people need to make pushing that spring back up all the way into its cutout part of their muscle memory. It needs to be all the way in its reassembly cutout - even though it immediately drops back down the first time you rack it after assembly.
