I had a 1903-A3 some years ago. Nice rifle and the caliber was akin to the 7.62x54R (30-06). There is alot these old war horses can do. My favorite was a bro officer's Enfield Jungle carbine in 308 with 10 round detachable magazines no less.

I agree, these old war horses have some fight still in them. The sights on this rifle are nothing short of outstanding even despite the fact they lack windage adjustment. The rifles shoot so well and point so naturally that making a hit with it really is much easier than one might think.
I don't have a Jungle Carbine, but I do have an old SMLE MKIII in the safe I'll have to break out once I find some .303 ammo for it.
I have a 1917. I always wanted to have it chopped to a jungle carbine kind of thing like the smle. BUT since my grandpa gave it to me I guess not.
So many of them have been chopped and/or sporterized I don't think I could do it to one myself. I would keep it just the way it is, they're only becoming more and more valuable. I've seen pristine examples selling for $600-$800. I got mine for a steal given the condition at $425.
Great review, sir! Thanks for doing a fighting bolt rifle.
I have a Springfield 1903 that I love to shoot, family heirloom as well. Great additions to anyone's collection/armory.

Thanks for that. My dad has a 1917 Eddystone which is similar. It is very gratifying to shoot a 90+ year old rifle with 60 + year old ammo and still put them on the target no problem.
I like the M1917 better than the Springfields. They fit me better. I used to like the peep sights better. I have an 03A3 but never really got into it as the M1917 had already taken its place as my favorite.
M1917 is my all time favorite MIL issue bolt gun. The sights and sight radius make it super easy to hit with at distance. Once you have your wind dope, smacking steel at 500 is not a problem and the action strength is second to none.

I totally agree. I don't feel poorly armed with one on my shoulder, even in this age of AR's and AK's. It's awesome to grab the old gal, stick a few loose rounds in my pocket, put six in the mag and one in the chamber then walk my property. If you can see it, you can hit it even at extended ranges. Shooting off-hand with the M1917 with it's 26" barrel at man sized targets 200 yards away is a breeze.
If the SHTF tomorrow, you could do far worse than a M1917.
