LOL! I wanted to ask about the G3/91, have you used the ACE adapter to put a folder on one? Is it worth it to do so?

That very well could be. This will be an interesting project to watch. Hopefully there will be some sort of advantage with this new coming system for me vs. getting a Socom style M14 since I am already set up with a full sized M14. I like options.

my concern, as an addict, is simple: "crap, how much is THIS gonna cost?"

I haven't done that because it replaces the mechanical buffer with a sacrificial rubber piece. I don't mind it on a 94...rubber buffer anyway, but I like the "ghillie buffer" MSG-90 copy in a regular stock for .308, and Bill Springfield's modified buffer internals in a MagPul stock (won't take the MSG 90 length). Both lengthen out and smooth the recoil impulse. One of our techs is running only a buffer tech polymer buffer, though, and likes it, so I imagine the ACE adapter will work nicely. I've been toying with putting one on my G3k clone. It's got to be better than the A3 that sometimes gets used..... but this is turning into a hijack, so I'll quit while I'm ahead.

Obviously not AK-action, but my mind drifted towards the SCAR 17 as well; as you said though it isn't nearly modular enough ... yet.

I am personally glad that this thread was started and I look forward to sitting back and gleaning, the one component I feel I need to add to my safe soon would be a good GSR/UR; I am waivering as to whether or not I want to travel the Rem 700 road or watch the Vepr line unfold. One thing is for certain, I am VERY excited to see what is coming down the road.

I haven't thought of this idea and am getting an education. But if modularity comes into play why not the ACR? From what I've read it's up at the top.

Has there been enough experience with a PROPERLY built AR-308 platform in 16-18" config to throw it out of the possibilities?

Magpul 20 rounder mags appear to be good to go.

Edit: I have owned a couple of RobArms Vepr AK's in the past and thought the receiver and overall quality were most excellent. I ended up selling them however, because the barrels, being from a RPK, were always too heavy for a standard AK. in 7.62x39. I always shied away from the 308 due to the magazine problem.

I'd lean toward some sort of AR-10 myself. Adoption of the SR-25 and LMT by significant segments of the U.S. and UK militaries in combination with .308 PMAGS seal the deal for me. FALs and G3 parts and magazine availability seems to get less and less as the years go by. Has the SCAR really been adopted or is it still quasi developmental? I've heard in the case of the SR-25 that there's some parts commonality with AR-15s/M-16s/M4s.

My prefered 7.62x51mm barrel length would be 18"

I have no problem with a well done AK based .308 but I think parts and mags will always be an issue. OTOH I think the Colombian military and some others adopted the 7.62mm Galil. If there was a U.S. made 7.62 mm Galil with a solid rail and IMI or Colombian made mil spec magazines available at a good price, that would be interesting.

I bought a DPMS 16" AR308 and custom built a M110 20" upper for it, which I had spiral fluted to lighten (shoots 3/4 inch groups with 168 Fed match).

Thinking, what do I do with the 16" upper, I decided to get a nice chrome BC/B from Fulton Armory, Geisler trigger, various magpul stuff and an JP ajustable gas block. The rifle is very light and handy as it is, but kicks a bit too stout for long term wear and tear with the standard gas block. Once I get the JP I will do a total test and let you all know how it performs.
