24 hour watch

All this watch talk has got me interested in an old desire of mine. Over the years Ive wanted but never purchased a watch with a 24 hour dial. I DON'T want a digital watch; rather a traditional hour/minute hand watch that the hour hand makes ONE revolution per day. That puts midnite on the "top" and noon on the "bottom". The minute hand is the same as any other watch. Some dials are half black and half white etc.

I know they are out there and I can google them; but I wonder how many of you guys have them--or want one like meeeeeeee.

I have a Rolex GMT Master. Its a great watch BUT a lousey time keeper. Ive had it for over 30 yrs. Theres nothing like a Rolex. The 24 hour feature was very handy when I was overseas. Now Im a cop and work midnites, a true 24hour watch would just be cool.

I had one of the Fortis Pilot 24-hour watches a while back, it was interesting user-interface-wise, I ended up giving it away to someone. The internals were very unremarkable, just a normal movement with a huge spacer to make it fit in the case:

Alas not. I usually bought from several vendors I'd worked with for years, who'd cut me 35-40% off on most stuff. Your best bet is to find a good watch discussion forum, like TimeZone, and ask there who has the best deals today. You may also be able to find almost-new watches being sold by watch junkies in such places, they are worse than gun traders :-)

Lousy Rolex timekeeping = needing service. As I'm actually IN the watch business and see a lot of supposedly poor timekeepers that turn out to be great timekeepers after a major servicing. How well a mechanical watch KEEPS time after servicing depends greatly on sticking to a prescribed servicing interval and the diligence of the individual servicing the watch. I have gone through MANY watchmakers including official factory service centers (Rolex included) with mixed results. Some of the best watchmakers who have serviced my Rolexes, Pateks, etc were not certified, but were hell on wheels in servicing and regulating a mechanical watch. Find the right guy to service your Rolex, and you will be VERY pleased with how well it keeps time...but generally don't expect it to give a decent quartz timepiece a run for its money.
