I picked up this thread when reading a recent RH trainee reply; wish I'd seen it earlier. Great bit of writing and very definitely DVD material; you could even call it " The first 9/10ths of the Fight" (thanks Sonny). While I've heard Gabe (or someone) say something to the effect that "the best gunfight to be in is the one you avoid"... more or less..., what you've written provides the logic and structure people put can to practical use without a twinge of paranoia (who said "Why would I be paranoid, I'm armed"??).

Some might call it "common sense" (though Voltaire said in 1740 "Common Sense... is NOT very common" and I believe he was right and French!), living this way, AND having a plan, and practicing all the time- it can be great fun, actually- should be THE "common sense". How else can you consider yourself responsible for family, tribe, and self??
Thanks again; hope it's OK using it in class and praising your efforts. Let's talk to Gabe about a DVD, or have you already?

I have greatly enjoyed this thread. Some pre-fight/attack cues were discussed (facial groom). Can anyone recommend a good book, video, or other source on pre-fight/attack cues. I want to increase my awareness and learn more cues to watch for.

+1 This is a great article by Randy on how to handle the pre-fight aspects. I find myself rereading it every so often just to get it ingrained in my head a little deeper. I will definitely pick up the video when it comes out.

To Rktman, there are a couple videos I've come across that cover pre-assault indicators. One is Practical Unarmed Combat Vol 1 by Shivworks / SouthNarc and another is Die Less Often Volume 3 by Guro Marc Denny / Dog Brothers.

Every time I read in the news about some unfortunate victim, I am reminded of this system of dealing with unknown contacts. The most recent of these is the soldier who was beaten and robbed in Tampa. His encounter with thugs would have ended up differently if he had just paid attention, evaded, stopped encrachment, used his tape loop, and stepped to his 3 or 9 o'clock!
