Seriously, this is always good material to hear when you're teaching, I hope everyone absorbs it.
Touching on Sonny's comment of spending 95% training for the last 5%, do a search on a Public Safety risk management expert Gordon Graham. In his matrix, this would fall in the High Risk/Low Frequency category. This usually becomes the most dangerous place, and why the last 5% is SO important.

The point though was that completely ignoring the first 95% is what generally leads to folks mysteriously finding themself in the last 5%. If they'd spent more time in the first 95% then the last 5 might have looked a bit differnt.

Most places teach you to "be aware" and "Shoot well".......that is like showing you the eastern rim of the canyon and the western rim.... and NONE of the canyon.

There is a lot more to it than just the very beginning and the very end. There is a lot to the prefight recogniton of problem and positioning that is rarely if ever covered. And let me repeat.... I didn't invent this stuff. But I feel pretty confident that I have made it a little easier to retain and use by applying the "PESTS EAT FAST " structure to it.

Randy covered a lot of this material in a DPS class I took with him about two and half years ago. I have some of this same stuff scribbled in a notebook somewhere.

One of the things that makes this so good is that it is accessible and achievable material even for the relatively inexperienced or beginners to the self-defense world.

Excellent! Simple, intuitive and positive. I especially like the emphasis on PAYING ATTENTION. Thank you for taking the time to put this into the data stream. I will be saving this essay. One little nitpick, and it is really small. I would put the stupid rules in this order. People, places, things. It really does start with who you are with. But putting all three together is a surefire recipe for disaster.
