Water and Fuel cans

I understand the EPA has decided we need gas cans that are emissions safe, they also seem to require 3 hands and a midget to operate without spillage (so hows that good for the environment).

Are there any sources for approved "Jerry Cans" that work and look like they belong on a combat vehicle? Mounts? I can find plenty of the plastic lawn mover cans; but Id like a serious go-to-war can and mount.

My brother just bought a couple through the LandRover dealer that look pretty good. He found them on-line, so you can look them up and see if they're acceptable. I don't have the web address, so you'll have to look it up; if you can't find it, PM me and I'll try to get it from him.

Those guys have about the best stuff going. Fuel and water cans that are pretty well indestructible and work very well.

I went into the local surplus place looking for ammo cans the other day (ended up paying too much, but nobody else around here has them), and they had some of those Scepter cans, which they wanted $80 each for. I've got several of the Wedco NATO style cans, which I like a lot. I was lucky, when I ordered them in 2008, they mentioned the EPA ban that I had never heard of before. After some verification that they were actually going to ban fuel cans, I called them back and doubled my order. After the ban I saw cans like I'd bought going for in excess of $150 on Ebay. As with the AK parts kits, I bought enough for my own use, but I really wish I had bought more because I knew the price was going to go up once the supplies were exhausted, and I could have tripled my money. You can still get that style can and spout for potable water, but they use a food grade lining and a different gasket that will be destroyed by fuel.

Another option is to buy the post-ban Blitz style cans and modify them to pre-ban configuration by installing a vent tube. This will allow you to use one of the pre-ban nozzles and have it pour correctly. They're nowhere near as good as the NATO style cans, but you can get them and modify them for reasonable cost. I'm not aware of any easy way to modify the post ban Wedco cans to a usable configuration. Here is a thread I posted on Jeepforum showing how to modify the Blitz cans:

How about an empty small plastic mower/chainsaw type gas jug with plastic nozzle, fill it from metal jerry can and use it to fuel car.

I bought a dozen steel cans when I first heard of this nonsense. Ten are black steel swiss jobs. Tough as nails. The other two are brand new steel and OD colored. I plan on getting a tire carrier that accepts them and will keep them on the ride.

I got rid of all my plastic cans once I got the NATO style ones. The whole reason I ordered the metal ones in the first place, was due to an incident I had one day fueling my Jeep from one of the plastic cans. The plastic retainer for the plastic nozzle popped off the threads of the plastic can as I was pouring fuel, and fuel went everywhere, including into one of my eyes. Fortunately, I was in town at my house and not out in BFE hours away from the nearest hospital. I was able to get the fuel rinsed out of my eye, and then spent a pleasant afternoon at the ER getting it flushed thoroughly. I now wear safety glasses any time I am fueling from cans, even with the metal ones.

There are several decent can carriers out there; with the value of the good metal cans these days, be sure to get something that can be locked securely, and covers the opening so you can't be siphoned. If you are willing to have a shop custom build you a set, you could go with something like the boxes I built, that I posted in another thread here. They keep them out of the weather, as well as out of sight and out of mind. The only thing I would do different if building them again is make them out of stainless, but I wasn't sure how well they were going to work out, and I didn't want to spend the extra money on materials. But corrosion is not likely to be an issue where you live. Here's the build thread I started for them on Jeepforum:
