.444 Marlin is a solution in search of a problem. It offers no advantage over either a .45-70 or .450 Marlin, and has several disadvantages compared to either. Originally Posted by DaveJames

Except it will work in the semi !! And besides its a want, I don't give a tinkers damn for the 45-70 or the 450 marlin its just a wanna be 458 American, if i want to play with a 45 rifle I shoot my 450 3 1/4 nitro

Sorry for projecting my lever gun bias into my reply; obviously if the .444 is the best that will work in the platform you want to use, then use it. Maybe that will give it a reason for existing. Although I could say the same thing about your suggestion of the .450 nitro cartridge; it won't work in the leverguns that are so popular here due to their light weight and handling qualities.
