In early 2003, my now-ex-wife was shopping in Nuevo Laredo - when it was still fairly safe - and snapped a pic of this tough looking hombre carrying a Para FAL and standing guard outside a shop. What looks like a double exposure on his uniform is actually her reflection in the window glass because she snapped the photo from inside the shop. At the time, the shopkeeper told her he was Mexican police or army that had moved in because the merchants had requested extra security due to some violent robberies. Just a taste of things to come, huh?

Anyways, back then I posted it on FALFiles and most folks agreed that he wasn't police or military but probably private muscle. I'm sure that he's either dead or working for the cartels or Los Zetas by now.

    My personal rifles.

SAR-48s, the para I machined from a type III to a sort-of type I. DSA top covers, modified to let the scopes sit lower.

both have 17.35" barrels, the para has a modified inch selector, which I'll add to the other eventually, but right now they seem scarce. Izzy mag catch.

The zeis scope is on loan so I'm not going to spraypaint it yet.

Mark, who makes the sling that you have on the fixed stock rifle?

I don't know. I got it used. I was told it was GI issue. It was made to wrap around the handguard and butstock of an AR, but the sling mounts from the side. I don't like it on the side. I want it to hang "at the ready". So I laced some 550# cord between the left and right side sling mounts of the stock portion. I cut about a foot off of the carry strap, and I discarded the handguard portion. I used a blue force wire sling mount that I got from OST, so that the nylon portion of the sling wouldn't obstruct the front sight. Also great for AKs because it won't melt on a hot gas tube (which is why AK slings have the metal plate on the front..

On the other FAL, I cut the front sling swivel and rewelded it into an eyelet - makes the blue force wire sling mount stay in one place better. I'm considering tac welding or soldering the front sling band so it holds the sling at 10 o'clock instead of allowing full rotation around the barrel. On the para, I Think I will remove the rear sling mount and change the position where the roll-pin retains it - either making the slot go all the way around (which will allow the sling to rotate 360) or just changing it by 90 degrees so the sling mount sis left to right instead of up and down. That way the sling will rest in the vertical instead of horizontal. Or on second though, make the slot between 9 and 12 o'clock so the sling rests at a 45 degree angle. As it is, it gets bunched up on one side.

Side note - I found that slings that were long enough when I was wearing ALICE gear were too short when my chest had the additional bulk of a chest rig or vest.

Despite the bulk of the Velcro straps making the rear sling mount, it doesn't interfere with my cheekweld, as my cheek is in front of it.

The Vietnam era AR jungle-sling has been my favorite for the AR, as far as positioning it so that letting go, it rests in the ready. On that sling, the front mount is a hard wire "U" bent for a sling to fit through and designed to go through the open part of the front sight. In this example, I went through a sight-block mounted sling loop. But the Blue Force wire, I think is better because it is possible with the shorter GI version for the sling to block the front sight when pointing in. They make a short and a long. I've only played with the short.

It also worked at the DMR class for a guy who had no front sight block or front sling mount, just by making a larks-head with the wire around the barrel. Not ideal, but better than no carry strap.

There is a similar sling sold by OST, that is designed to make lengthening and shortening the sling a function of a single extension on the buckle - that's what is on the para. But I found just walking around that it would slide out to max extension. I don't think the concept is bad, but it doesn't have enough bite on the nylon sling it comes with. I think it would work better on a strap made of a nylon/cotton blend, or one a little thicker. Kind of like trying to tie a knot on nylon rope - it doesn't have enough friction and sometimes will pull itself out. So I removed the "stop" buckle and switched it to the other side of the loop, so that it locks the sling at my "rest" position. To shorten it, I slide just that one buckle down the single layer of webbing. Easy to do as it is not easy to do through 2 layers.

    Here's my 2 DSAs...one StG58A standard rifle and a 16" Para. Love them both.

Here they are with the other FNs in my collection

I'm also collecting parts to build a rifle very similar to the pix below...while I know it isn't "real" I love the way Izzy furniture looks on a 18" carbine.
