Thread: Slingwork

  1. #41
Wow, that's a long sling Gabe.

I used to like to use my sling when possible as a brace for accurate longer shots. You know, wrapping your left arm in and around the sling before grabbing the fore-stock. This was similar to the older leather military-type slings that allowed for a quick snap on the sling to open it for bracing and a tug the other way to recover. Maybe bad ju-ju in today's tactical training. (?)

In a practical combat situation, I preferred hooking the clip on my cotton web M-16 sling on the rear swivel and looping the other end around the back side of the front sight. This allowed me to carry my weapon over my right shoulder with my hand on the pistol grip, thumb on the safety. Then with a quick draw action bring the weapon to bear for an initial squirt while ducking for cover.

    Hello...

I'm new here. I've been reading threads, and learning all sorts of new ideas. I have a three of questions about the sling "transition to secondary weapon" concept generated by mere curiosiy.

1.Is this a "sling draped over the neck" technique?

    2. Doesn't the transition to second weapon time-frame increase significantly when one slings the long-gun over ones shoulder as Gabe depicted, instead of simply dropping the long-gun in place (on the sling) and transitioning to the secondary weapon? I suppose one can slide the long-gun "around the corner" to park it, after your secondary weapon shots are made. I'm sure the technique is fast, I was just wondering. (There's probably an answer to my question on a thread somewhere, I just haven't found it yet)...

    3. Am I misunderstanding the techniques intended use, or am I violating a weaponcraft philosophical principal unknown to me?

Whatever technique you use TEST IN ON FORCE ON FORCE. Transitioning to pistol while shooting at a piece of paper is margnally interesting. I want to see you do it while exploding off the X to the right or left while drawing a pistol and shooting.

    What I've seen.

    • Guns hanging in front of you are cool when standing and shooting but become impediments when in the CRG reactive envelope.

    • Slings that you must "get into" will not be used in a grab-the-gun-and-run scenario...all you will have is a bunch of loose nylon creating problems for you.

    • Slinging up decreases the ability to use the weapon to block a surprise contact weapon attack in CRG environments as well as the ability to transfer to the opposite shoulder.

So set this drill up with your pet sling. Using an empty rilfe and airsoft pistols, start with the rifle mounted. Have your partner begin to draw and shoot you. As soon as you see this (and ostensibly your rifle failed to shoot) transition to pistol.

If your transition method...whatever it is works, cool. If not, don't get trapped by it...change it.

If getting off the X is important with pistols, it certainly is not less so when transitioning to a second weapon in reactive mode.

    Gabe:
What are chances of having a section set up to store all of your walk throughs that no one can post in but you and the other instructors. If some one has a question they can post into a new thread referencing the original walk through. this stuff is gold.

+1 for me. I think it is a great idea.

Thank you for your response to my question Mr. Suarez. I appreciate your time. Interesting views.

In addition, I think the quote below is a very good idea. Having an area to post your walk throughs, instructionals, drills, etc would be great. A section that no one can post to except you and your trainers. A sort of "instructional repository", where one could find all the techniques you all mention in the threads.

I like the transition to alternate weapon Gabe.

But, the charging handle on the FAL rips you a new buttcrack when you let the rifle go.

Probably wouldn't feel it if "the need" arises.

Okay, I know this is an old thread but I was reading through it today, then found link link and just had to post it. I got a chuckle out of it after reading what Gabe has to say about the "30 minute DVD on how to work it."

This thread is stickied anyway, so no harm no foul right? ;)
