I like to mix it up. In the warm months, like now, I prefer to work out outdoors. Warm weather workouts for me are a lot of pushups, kettle bell exercises, farmer carries, sledgehammer/tire workouts, hill sprints and 2-3 mile walk/hikes w/ the dogs. Yoga-X 1x/week.

Cold weather is in the barn w/ plates and dumbells, and some kettle bells. Max Trainer intervals for cardio and long, cold-weather walk/hikes w/ the dogs. Yoga-X 1x/week.

I am doing variable résistance training using the X3 system developed by Dr. John Jaquish. When used correctly it is a challenge. Bands range from 50 LBS to 600 LBS. I have a lot of joint issues from my Army days. The system is very protective of the joints, tendons, and ligaments.

Both are useful, depending on goals. I'm mostly free weights, but a lot of that is because most of my workout time is spent in various crossfit gyms.

I just finished up a great workout at a beach hotel gym on a Greek island, using a mix of barbell, dumbbell, kettlebell, and combo cable machine movements. About to hit the beach for the 3rd time today.
