Purchased, and downloading as I type. As an aside I was taught various katas over the years, but nobody ever gave me a satisfactory explanation of their purpose. Now that I know the purpose it makes perfect sense.

OK - I'll uncheck the paranoid box for a bit. I was in the camp of "I want it local" so that it could not be held hostage or deleted in some fashion from the cloud. As long as I can drag it to local storage at some point, I'm good.

So here’s the deal with instructional videos.

Step one - You buy it.

Step two - You watch it. Most guys stop there.

Step three - You PRACTICE it. This is where the value starts to comes in.

Step four - this is STUDY. It is a rinse repeat of steps two and three, and it's where UNDERSTANDING starts to kick in. Study and practice to really learn the movement, the technique, the principles. Learn it and make it part of you.

Once you have studied and practiced the material, you don’t NEED the video. Yes, it’s useful to revisit over time. There will be things you forget, or things that come to light upon repeated viewing that only make sense after a lot of time, study, and practice.

But if you keep up on the practice…you reach the point you no longer need the video.

Watching it once is not enough. Yeah, you will certainly understand a lot of the ideas…it’s not like they are complicated. But watching and knowing is not the same as understanding and doing. Being able to DO on command and without thinking is the goal. And that simply does not come without practice.

Imagine how good one could become just doing Diagonal Lines once a day for a year.

Thank you Gabe for looking into this. I suspect more of us will be switching to Vimeo now that we know we can retain our purchase and not "lease" it.


One advantage over DVDs with Vimeo is 1080p. Nice bonus.
