As others have noted, the 45/70 simply excels at putting meat on the ground, and you can eat right up to the hole. I’ve never explained this here, but my user name comes from the fact that I typically hunt with a Marlin Guide Gun in 45/70. My hunting buddies always have the latest “super ultra mag”, so when asked once what my rifle was chambered in I quickly invented the more “marketable” 45Smashemflat.

Indeed. The wide meplat does a great job of smashing things while also causing a wound channel larger than the bullet.

Dorkface is channeling his inner Teddy Roosevelt. Next year we're going to hear about his new .405 Winchester.

I carry two kinds of trauma kits. One for fixing it and one for causing it.

Very nice looking setup. Once I get a location picked out and move I'll be wanting something like that.
And it's also a shame I sold my Winchester reproduction Big Medicine.405-Winchester.
I could invision some Winchester collector having a heart attack seeing one shortened and supressor mounted.

I can vouch for its effectiveness on feral hogs.
I shot 3 with my guide gun, on a recent hunt in Texas, with one blowing the heart completely out. Still have plenty of pork in the freezer. The 45-70 is a “ heartbreaker”.

In every country where independence has taken the place of liberty, the first desire of a manly heart is to possess a weapon, which at once renders him capable of defence or attack, and, by rendering its owner terrible, often makes him feared- Alexandre Dumas

Feral hogs? Feral Buicks would be in trouble with that thing.
