What books are people reading to acquire streetcraft? I'm finding the Clint Emerson's 100 skills books to be useful. Jack Carr has a lot of field craft in his fiction books. I like the term street craft. It is related to tradecraft of an intelligence service but for the man on the street who has a different mission.

Cover - Not the kind that stops incoming fire but rather the type that explains things, more specifically explains you. Two types of cover in this context: Cover for Status explains who you are; this can be real or created. But you must look and act the part "Talk the talk and walk the walk", in appearance, speech and mannerism. The second type of cover is Cover for Action this explains why you are where you are and what you are doing, this should align with your cover for status.

Backstopping - Backstopping simply put, cover for your cover. If someone checks into your cover what will the find? or as I like to say when they "peel the onion", backstopping involves social engineering and understanding human behavior "EXPLOIT LAZINESS", as well as it can involve technical means but not always. The more professional and savvy your opposition, the more in-depth your backstopping needs to be.

some of the best advice here was don't live surrounded by people that hate you.

I thank god every day that I ended up in a relatively small town even more so when I got out of town to a house on a few acres in the country.

we had some BLM activity here last year but it consisted of people giving speaches at the courthouse nothing else.

We had a black pedestrian killed in an accident and someone leaked a racist text message from the driver the victims family were contacted by some national groups and they told them to stay out.

things went that way here because rioting looting and creating mayhem will get you dealt with in a very abrupt manner.

As a simple crook example of this:

Copper finds the needles but not the rest of your rig. Thug says " Im a diabetic" now what? Good cop says "type one or type two ?" Whats your usual dosage ? what numbers are you trying for?

Can you answer? Do you have an old vial of insulin? Most cant, but a few savvy ones can (or they are a diabetic in addition to a doper ;)

or "im coming from my girlfriends house" Whats her name? what color is her car? What building is her apartment in? (things my roving units can check pretty easily/quickly) thug in a pinch will see a blue car with a flower on the bumper next to building 12... whats her name? I always call her baby ;)

or "I was at joes bar" Are they still having the pool tournament on thursdays? good crooks (or folks looking to backstop more effectvely will know that joes is on tuesdays, and the ad over the urinal is for the strip club)

depth should be dependent on severity of the investigation.... are you breaking curfew? Drop a body? Moving contraband?

On cover, I used to work the projects up way north in the USA (before I got smart and moved to warmer and more supportive environments about two decades ago)

We knew if you were in a car above a certain cost, were white, or were in the car by yourself, you were either LOST (unlikely) or trying to score.

Dealers back then had a really neat street level distribution network back then. Got a nice high position on a opposing intersection and could see thug one on "A" street take the money and signal to the guy at the intersection of "A and 1st street" how much the buyer is getting. Intersection thug signals to the guy on 1st street the number while the buy makes the corner. thug three gives the buy the number purchased.

Money and drugs are never in the same place making a buy bust a very difficult operation in that the juice isnt worth the squeeze in narc operations, especially when thug three with the dope is a minor (they always are)

Tagging for interest as well. Speech (patterns, sound, and vocabulary) are things I'm also interested in, in significant part because I end up with the reputation everywhere I go of speaking somewhat idiosyncratically (can't imagine why that's the case). Same thing goes for how I write; people who know me can generally pick out my writing, even informally done writing like these comments.

How much attempt at adaptation ends up sounding like you're a wannabe who doesn't actually know how to do it? Not even entirely certain what I'm trying to ask here, other than how to effectively program in appropriate speech patterns for different kinds of covers, if trying to avoid detection.

There are GPS jammers on the market. I wonder how hard it would be to build one that was *just* enough power that when you place it on the or right next to the GPS receiver in the car it buggers it up, but does not have enough range to mangle anything much beyond that.

Our entire gang unit was surveying a murder suspect He drove into Larry Flint's casino in Gardena and went inside. Two white officers went inside and were the only non asians in the place. The armed casino security busted me putting a tracker on his car. They sat in towers watching the lot and I was the only 6"4 white guy walking around in it. That caused the whole unit to be exposed, the type of cars we were driving, the clothes we were wearing etc.

Time worked for this suspect. Radio batteries run dry, dudes forget spares. Other higher priority shit happens. People get tried and make mistakes.

Latter he played the pull off on a free way exit then merge back on at the last second trick. An inexperienced member mirrored rather than just exiting.

He changed rental cars every few days as he knew it took time for us to get the warrant for a tracker on a new car. That took resources off him to go to the court, the rental car agency, etc.

Pro tip. The longer it takes you to compose your story and the more your eyes do things the more I know you are making the shit up. It needs to be pre canned and fact to you.

Another example of costal cop's comment. If you are working on a car have spare parts laying around but make sure they match the make and model of car you are working on.

I can drive through a Motel 6 parking lot and pick out the hookers and clients from the cars.

Another example - black and white fever. How people react to seeing a marked unit. So if you are sitting dressed as a homeless guy with a sign and the people you are hiding from go buy, don't stiffen up. That is a hard reflex to fight.
