Someone told me that when I was quite young. It remains just about the best advice anyone ever gave me.

For over 200 years people around the world have been fleeing their own country to come to America for freedom. It would seem people are more loyal to freedom than their country.

Where will people flee to when America is no longer free?

If we are loyal to freedom what does fighting for that loyalty look like in this day and age?

Without sounding repetitive. My trust in people is very selective.
    Loyalty the same thing.

As individuals there are certainly many alternatives...such as saving our own skin at the cost of our country.

Perhaps times have just progressed to the point that Americans can only look out for themselves and watch the decline. Maybe its a matter of timing?

I don't have the answers or the insights.

Meanwhile we continually monitor the landscape and try to position ourselves with as many advantages as possible.

Institutions, as also men, are imperfect. There is only one that walked the earth that was perfect. To give absolute loyalty to anyone or any institution is fraught with disappointment, however, to abandon military or civil service is fraught with danger. There are powers in the world that would enjoy a US in disarray and division. As our power wanes, certainly other powers will wax.

My son wants to join the service. He is intelligent and learned, I would not expect him to give absolute loyalty, as he is a free and thinking man. I am encouraged by some of the younger veterans seeking elected office. Perhaps, the younger generation can shift the focus back to defense of the constitution and our way of life. I am not optimistic, but if we are to survive as a nation we must course correct.

Humans are extremely tribal. There are some that think we're genetically predisposed to live in an extended clan system. Certainly, we invent tribes when we don't have them naturally---sports fans, anyone?

IMO, this country became great because it let anyone who wanted in to the tribe join. All they had to do was accept the foundations and they *were* Americans. Those foundations weren't ethnic or language or custom-oriented. They were the culture outlined by the DoI and USC. And after a generation or so of hazing, no one cared where they came from.

Problem arose--and we're smack dab in it now--when folk wouldn't assimilate. Not in a baseball/apple pie way, but in an individual responsibility, fundamental morals way. Communism, socialism, socialism lite...all abhorrent to how we set things up. John Adams said, "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." And here we are.

The American tribe is fracturing, and we're seeing the creation of smaller ones to fill the need. Like here.
