Is there anything specific to look for or anything to stay away from? Brands, materials or features that are preferred?

I like the Bowers silicon covers. They aren't bulky and they keep me from burning myself. My primary reason for having one is so that I don't melt my skin. The precision rifle guys, who are more concerned with mirage, may have different preferences.

I have several from silencerco. They have high temp ones with an internal sleeve and regular ones. They are not available in too many sizes but I like them. They keep the silencer from causing a mirage and on shorter barrels keep me from burning myself. I just picked up another one a while back when they had them on sale.

I emailed Bowers Group on May 6th about availability and was told it would be several month's before they had anymore back in stock.

I have two of the magpul ones for surefire suppressors. They are a little bulky in size but work well. I’d sell you one for a reasonable rate if you have surefire cans.

Another user of the silencer-co covers here. Pro tip - don't shoot in the rain the leave the cover on as you will get rust on the adapter.

A friend of mine has a Bower's Silicone cover on a 556 can.
I always liked how well it worked. I guess I'll do a little
search to see if I can find one or two in stock somewhere.

I run Armageddon Gear on my 30 cal can, but its primarily for the mirage reduction when shooting long range. For semi auto's that will see a good rate of fire, Rifles Only used to sell a cover that held up well to mag dumps...I can't remember what they called it though.
