Counterfeit Benchmade Knives

My thoughts:

Buy from trusted sources and know how to spot a fake.
Where knives are concerned, I don't think "trusted sources" can always be trusted.

There are some damned good counterfeits out there.
An example is the Glock Field knife. I have a very early Glock knife and a knock off I bought years later from a very respectable source. They are indistinguishable in every way until you put the steel to the test. Because of China's flooding the market, I don't think you can get a real Glock knife on the retail market today.

The closest one can come to a consumer review of knives is something like this thread.

For a knife, I would like to know the rockwell hardness of the cutting edge and other things about the metallurgy. If it is a folder, I want to know how durable is its folding and locking function. Than other details of course. One sees something on an internet ad or catalog and you just do not know. I recently was looking at axes and it was hard to find a company would specifically mention their heat treatment of the ax head for example. Any bladed tool should spend a little on such features when describing the product.
Even for chinese made equipment. I am sure that the output of some of their factories is way better than that of others. But how does one know which is the better?

For trusted sources, agreed manufacturer is best or a small company that knows out to spot a fake.


For example, I'd only buy RMRs from SI because I know they can spot a fake and have a good control on inventory. Versus a larger outfit where an RMR might be swapped with a fake on a return. That's my biggest concern with counterfeits.


Back to good folders, I like Spyderco, Coldsteel, and Emerson. All sharp and durable. I've utterly abused my Emerson trainer and it's still 100%.


Favorite knife is the SI GU though. Thing is made in Mordor and made for one purpose.
