Default Retreating Japanese troops decimated by salt water crocs 1945

Picture this. You are part of a Japanese military group that gets flank by invading anglo and indian troops on an Island
Ramree Island, Burma in 1945, tried to retreat through 10 miles of mangrove swamps. They faced an enemy as old as the dinosaurs and just as fierce.
There is only a 10 miles coastal mangrove swamp between you and a larger force of Japanese soldiers. During the night British soldiers heard sporadic rifle shots and screaming. Swamp was full of salt water crocodiles.

Excellent find. Good for the crocs.

Aren't mangrove swamps supposed to be impassible under the best of circumstances? Not sure everyone had their thinking caps on for this one...

It can depend a lot on the tide and the particular mangrove. Do people regularly log it for example. Are there any trails through. Likely in daytime local could have led them through for the right incentive. In east africa the arabs at one sailed down to the mangrove to obtain wood needed for the building back home. The cedars of Lebanon were likely long gone my late medieval times.
The salt water croc is the worst for being man eaters.
