Default Suspect Arrested After Pointing Laser Pointer At Officer

Suspect Arrested After Pointing Laser Pointer At Officer NR20171ma

Downtown Los Angeles: On July 16th, 2020, around 8:40 a.m., a LAPD police officer in full uniform was in the area of 2nd St. and San Pedro when he felt a burning sensation in his eye. The officer believed the burning sensation may have been caused by a laser pointer. He was able to locate the suspect, 45-year-old Douglas Meyer, on a balcony in a nearby building. Additional officers went to the building and took Meyer into custody. Meyer was booked for Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Police Officer, booking #5973501.

The officer began to experience nausea, vomiting, an intense headache, and blurred vision. He has received initial medical treatment, but will require follow up treatment with a specialist due to the seriousness of the sustained injury and symptoms.

That's a hard sell. I would definitely consider an assault upon my eyes as a serious bodily injury. That justifies a lethal response. But I can still easily imagine being prosecuted for that, and a jury convicting. Juries do weird things, and they don't always follow the law. Even where there is no duty to retreat, juries like to see you make an attempt to avoid the problem. In this case, I can hear the jurors arguing among themselves. "Couldn't he have just lowered his baseball cap?" "Couldn't he have just looked the other way?" "Did he really need to shoot somebody in order to stop that?"

This is a pretty brilliant strategy on the part of the commies. They know how this will look in front of the cameras. The puppeteers are hoping that a cop will shoot one of their useful idiots in response to getting his retinas scorched with a laser. Then the commies will parade the body of their young 'revolutionary' through the streets like it's Mogadishu. They'll have a huge propaganda win, and all it will cost them is some idiot's life.

If you are the shooter in a justifiable shooting, usually it's better to be a cop. Sometimes it's better to not be a cop. Rarely are the two positions equal. This is one of the scenarios where it might be better to not be a cop--as long as you are not a protester/counter-protester. If you are a random person, minding his own business, and someone comes along to laser your eyes, a jury is going to imagine themselves being in your position. But if you are at a protest, as a cop, a protester, or a counter-protester, then they won't see themselves in your shoes. They'll see you as someone who went there with a mission, and be more inclined to say that you 'had it coming.' Police are also sometimes judge more harshly because a jury expects police to have magical powers to just stop someone from attacking them. The best way to avoid these dangers is to avoid the places where the situation arises--at protests. For police, that may not be an option. For the rest of us, though, you have the option of not dressing up like a 5.11 model and open carrying your AR-15 around downtown. If you choose to be a counter-protester, go into it knowing that this is a danger you face. And there will be other dangers that we haven't even yet identified.

Well...then don't shoot them. Best of luck to you but the lives of everyone with a laser are not as valuable than just one of my eyes.

I will take my chances and bet I will be just fine.

Absolutely this requires a lethal force response. There is now plenty of evidence that these attackers are using very powerful and dangerous lasers in these attacks. Exposure of thousandths of a second can cause permanent damage with some lasers. I am no more safe because I looked away than I would be safe if they pointed a gun at me and I stepped aside. Response by me will be the same in both cases.

    Gabe,

Do you think a study into counter-laser shooting tactics is worthy of research? Such as practicing “indexing” a target with reduced vision. Or do you think the traditional “Get-off-the-X” and engage is sufficient?

Only curious because it looks like attacks with lasers are going to continue. Laser pointers are cheap and readily available, so I don’t see this method of attack going away anytime soon. Our tactics need to match the new threat.

The laser pointers you can buy at Walmart or Amazon are not the variety strong enough to cause blindness.

That said, it could be articulated that the victim receiving the laser to the eye cannot tell the difference, and when that tactic is often used by Antifa groups, it is reasonable to respond as if they are attempting to blind you if you are on the receiving end from a mob that looks like such a group.

Fully agree. I don’t care what class of Laser is pointed at me, I have to assume worst case scenario: That it’s either a sniper or intent to blind me. Either way, they’re getting a mag full of Winchester Silvertips. And I’ll articulate it just fine.

My concern now is on tactics (the concepts that will preserve my eyesight and ensure the majority of my rounds down range end up lodged in the commie shithead).
