Default Iran escalates, U.S. will have to respond somehow.

Three rockets have hit the United States Embassy in Baghdad.

Three Katyusha rockets hit inside the compound while as many as five others landed in the area surrounding it, according to reports. American defense officials said that no one was killed in the attack, but some were wounded. It is unclear how severe the injuries are. A U.S. official told CNN that one rocket hit the embassy's dining facility, causing damage but no fatalities.

The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad was struck by at least one rocket Sunday evening in the latest attack on American targets in Iraq, a senior U.S. official confirmed to Fox News.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Hoshyar Zebari blamed the rocket attack on an “unruly militia.”

“The Embassy restaurant or canteen was damaged and burned. This is a very dangerous game by #PMF uncontrolled factions to galvanize the tense situation. It must stop,” he tweeted, referring to the Popular Mobilization Forces, an Iranian-backed militia in Iraq.

The traumatic brain injuries on U.S. servicemen from the attack on the Ayn al-Asad airbase in January took a while to be acknowledged by the Pentagon.

"...UPDATE : US Embassy, #Iraq Attack

    • At least one staff injured (AFP)
    • Multiple injured + taken in choppers out of Baghdad (Arabiya)
    • No word yet from Pentagon https://t.co/nUzO3BYkUM

Local media reports claimed a US military response against Iran-backed Shia Iraqi militias is imminent, yet this is also unconfirmed.
Meanwhile, an Al Jazeera correspondent observed that US jets were active over Baghdad in the hours following the attack, but that the uptick in flyovers has since ceased.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Hoshyar Zebari called it an act of an “unruly militia” and confirmed the following details in a Tweet, though the Pentagon has yet to give official statement: “The Embassy restaurant or canteen was damaged and burned. This is a very dangerous game by #PMF uncontrolled factions to galvanize the tense situation. It must stop,” he stated, in reference to the pro-Iran Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF).

Needless to say, the potential for the White House ordering a significant response in the coming hours or days remains high..."

Katyushas are relatively short range rockets (probably less than 20 miles).

They certainly weren't launched from Iran.
