    Default The necessity of chivalry

From C S Lewis, dating to about 1940.

"To spit on your hands and lower the pike; to stand fast over the body of Leonidas the King; to be rear guard at Kunu-Ri; to stand and be still to the Birkenhead Drill; these are not rational acts. They are often merely necessary." Pournelle

Chivalry is a confusing concept involving the concept of "gentleman" and the concept of "honor" as applied to society. The issue is that these are subjective. What was honorable in Lewis' time may or may not be wise in today's time. Clearly society is not the same either.

for me GFT works in any age of history. Within the confines of GFT, one can still be a moral person.
Reading a little history during medieval times, whether, Japan, China, Mongolia, Persia, Caliphs, Byzantium, France, those with martial power all acted the same, regardless of of their philosophies and religion with the exception of the Mongols. With them you submitted totally or they killed and destroyed everything. The philosophy of the Mongol and their Turkic tribal allies was that of the steppe raiders. All of the others had some value for human life and recognition that the powerful did owe something to the weak.

Its not about how fast you can load, but about how well you can shoot ..... Someone being saved by a speed load is not something that has happened with any regularity. Gabe Suarez
