    Default The necessity of chivalry

    https://youtu.be/GBT9LasyC3E

From C S Lewis, dating to about 1940.
    __________

"To spit on your hands and lower the pike; to stand fast over the body of Leonidas the King; to be rear guard at Kunu-Ri; to stand and be still to the Birkenhead Drill; these are not rational acts. They are often merely necessary." Pournelle

Chivalry is a confusing concept involving the concept of "gentleman" and the concept of "honor" as applied to society. The issue is that these are subjective. What was honorable in Lewis' time may or may not be wise in today's time. Clearly society is not the same either.

for me GFT works in any age of history. Within the confines of GFT, one can still be a moral person.
Reading a little history during medieval times, whether, Japan, China, Mongolia, Persia, Caliphs, Byzantium, France, those with martial power all acted the same, regardless of of their philosophies and religion with the exception of the Mongols. With them you submitted totally or they killed and destroyed everything. The philosophy of the Mongol and their Turkic tribal allies was that of the steppe raiders. All of the others had some value for human life and recognition that the powerful did owe something to the weak.

The need for people to feel safe and the urge that men have to keep their families safe have not changed in modern society; What has changed is that men are no longer forced to embrace, develop and come to terms with the violent side of their personality in order to protect their home/village,tribe.

At the same time this also removed the need for men to develop the other side of their personalities-When learning have to behaved properly kept you alive and calling somebody a liar for example got you killed. When your actions/words had real consequences surrounded by violence and violent men.

Out of this men and woman have now developed a third self centred side that they would find impossible to balance with even the "softer" side. Not interested in treating people with respect and making hard work out of being well mannered and polite.

One form of chivalry can occur between warriors on different sides that is a form of basic respect.
The British Zulu wars were bitterly fought.
    According to the movie
Zulu - Final Appearance And Salute Scene

The Zulus saluted and left after a very long violent battles that consisted of many attacks against a much smaller british force.

Under the 19th century gentlemanly standards, a gentleman that happened upon a man slapping a woman would immediately move into action and slap the man back, coming to the aid of the lady. In the 21st century, that "lady" may or may not be what she appears to be, and rushing to her aid may ot be the wisest course. I am ot in favor of the cowardly - "only for my own protection" model, but neither do I condone medling in the affairs of others. I have said many times that unless what you are seeing shocks the human conscience, there is no need to jump into the fray. And I think we know what that is. For those whose imagination has been blunted by the age of the snowflakes, some examples.

    The "lady" being slapped scenario:

1). A hooker slapped by her pimp - nothing to do with me
2). A clear domestic violence deal between low lifes - again...maybe call 911 if I am feeling it.
3). A 10 year old girl slapped by a man - depends on what happens next.
4). A 75 year old lady slapped by an 18 year old urban thug and his friends - different story.

Honor? Yes. Gentlemanly chivalry yes? But neither one of those means you get to be stupid and act like it was Tombstone in 1875.

These days, that "lady" hooker might even have a twig and berries.

As a boy growing up I heard countless men that they will never come to the aid of a woman again/any other person for that matter because the woman either started swearing & shouting at them/in some cases even started helping her husband fight them as soon as she was "safe";the one time in their lives they did try and help.

And as soon as the police arrive the woman siding with her husband and the good guy ending up being the one in trouble with the police. Having to work very hard not not to be the one taking a ride to the police-station But I also heard these same man stating that they kicked the guys ass to teach him a lesson to never put his hands on a woman again.

Fast forward to 2019 using the Flowchart and this statement and continuing to beat the husband up after he no longer poses a thread to the woman will now definitely get you arrested and then at the very least cost you hundreds and thousands of Rand`s in legal fees to try and stay out of jail/possible jail time.

And unfortunately the stories/examples have being repeated so many times through the years that the idea of:The person who attempts to end the violence will always ends up being the one in trouble with the law , trying to the the right thing, has become a fact
