Default Does a red dot G17 obviate the need for G34?

I have been toying with the idea of buying a G34
upper to swap with a standard length upper on
one of my G17's, just to try one. But while dissecting
the need or desire, I don't think I see an advantage
for the longer slide when my 17's have red dots, other
than a little more mass up front, which is somewhat
offset with a comp, which I already have, and a little
velocity gain which could be offset with an ammo change.

Anyone care to input their thoughts or comments?

    Thanks!

I have an SI 434 slide w/RMR and an OEM milled G22. I gotta say, the extra length serves no purpose. I'm happier than a Democrat with a stuffed ballot box with either one, but functionally, I don't need the longer barrel.

Now, if I was to start from zero, the gun I'd build would be a 19X with RMR and a comp. That would answer all sorts of mail.

    Thanks for the confirmation Sam.

I have one comped 17, which is my primary
carry, and I'll probably comp one more. I
already have another SI comp, so I'll get
a barrel on order sometime. I really like
the 19x for the color mainly, and it would
be a no brainer to comp one, but I don't
see dropping the coin just for the color.

    Thanks again!

I don't see the point of choosing at 34 over a 17. You get about an inch more barrel that gives you about 50 fps more but its still a 9mm. Between the two a 17 with a comp would be more useful. An RMR makes sight radius moot as well.

With absolutely no logical explanation why; I can confidently say that I shoot my 34 better than my 19 or 17. All 3 are identical with Suarez slides, barrels, triggers and parts. The 34 is simply the best shooting of the bunch. Would this happen for you? I have no idea. Can only confirm that that’s how it seems to work with mine.

My 19 (SI equipped) shoots sub 2 inch groups at 25 yds. I fully expect my skills are the limiting factor.

Same. There is some kind of magic in the 34.

The upside of the 34 (i have one) is that a surefire 300 with grip switch does not extend past the slide. With the advent of the inforce compact I transitioned to the 19X (but lost the grip switch) . Keep in mind though that i am carrying it in a OWB holster and wth my preferred drop of 1.5-2 inches with would cause the 34 to bury the barrel in the seat of my G-ride, the 19x doesnt. YMMV
