I benched with barbells for years but when i was in my late forties it began to bother my shoulders in the front deltoid area. I switched to using dumbbells for the bench press and the problem was solved. I can bench 110lbs each hand for ten reps with the bells with no pain, but just 135lbs on a barbell and I'll immediately feel it.

The reason to bench or squat for me would be to hypertrophy muscle groups. I DO NOT feel bench in the chest, but rather in the shoulders and triceps. Same for the traditional squats. So I use exercises that target what I want to target rather than the traditional choices.

I do weighted dips as my primary chest work with some additional dumbell work thrown in. I think it works fairly well and my chest is well developed. I never looked like this when all I was doing was chasing bench numbers.

Adding...I am plenty strong so that I am not worried about adding 5 pounds to anything. But at almost 60, I am more focused on staying lean and building as much lean muscle as I can. So I am much more focused on hypertrophy now than on being stronger.

I might have done a bunch of research this morning and I might have a container of collagen this afternoon...

I look forwards to seeing how much it helps my joints if nothing else.

I'll have some by Thursday. Tapering off on cheese and, after some research, almond butter--been eating too much of that.

As for yoghurt and kefir, K2 and portable protein with probiotics are hard to give up.

    Working on it.

Jocko willink also complained about bench messi g with his shoulders (so did stallone) and both do push ups and dips for chest while doing weights for everything else
