Default San Diego Co, CA: Synagogue shooting

The basics sounds like a 19 yo guy got radicalized over the past 6 months and decided to kill Jews and Muslims. He tried arson of a mosque last month, but that didn't do much. Yesterday, he used an AR type rifle at a Chabad House, killing one 60 yo woman and injuring 3 others. It is reported that his gun jammed after he had fired 12 - 14 shots. BG was fired upon by off-duty Border Patrol agent (paid security? unpaid/informal security? just a member?) causing hitting BG's vehicle, but not BG. BG called 911 on himself and was spotted, stopped and gave up peacefully.

My questions are about the equipment and tactics used.

    BG:
make, model and caliber of arms: AR, presumably .223
    ammunition: ?
    other weapons: ?
    defenses: wore a helmet
other: wore a tactical vest (or body armor?) with spare magazines

    GG (off-duty BP agent):
make, model and caliber of arms: ?
    ammunition: ?
    other weapons: ?
    defenses: ?
    other: ?

Other questions: did BG's gun jam, BG flee and BG get fired upon (this is what I believe from what I've read), or did BG get fired upon by GG, BG's gun jam during gunfight causing BG to flee?

    no prior criminal record; no known association with white supremacist groups; posted a manifesto on social media; is thought to have attempted to livestream attack on FB; hates Trump as a Jewish puppet; claims Jews control finance and media and carrying out program of white genocide; wanted to force government confiscation of firearm, which he thought would then initiate civil war; his father is a HS teacher and president of an Orthodox Presbyterian church;

Knowing about his weapons in detail is not something I need to know a lot about. Why his rifle jammed might be . I am more interested in his motivations and what his extremist social groups were. Seems like a NAZI if he was killing jews and muslims.
Hitting an unprotected group of people and managing to kill a 60 yr old woman is not a difficult achievement.

About the gunman that the media is saying https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/27/u...-shooting.html
At the moment they are saying an AR15 rifle and that perhaps the "The gunman then fled the building, perhaps because his gun stopped working, the authorities said."
The San Diego police chief, David Nisleit, said that after the shooting, the gunman called the California Highway Patrol to report his location on Interstate 15 in Rancho Bernardo. He then surrendered to a police officer who was responding to the attack, jumping out of his vehicle with his hands up.
The police said they were investigating whether the gunman had posted a manifesto before the shooting on the online message board 8chan.
The document, an anti-Semitic screed filled with racist slurs and white nationalist conspiracy theories, echoes the manifesto that was posted to 8chan by the gunman in last month’s mosque slayings in Christchurch, New Zealand. The document’s author, who identified himself as John Earnest, claimed to have been inspired by the Christchurch massacre, as well as the shooting in Pittsburgh, and motivated by the same white nationalist cause.

This report makes it sound like BG's gun jammed, he fled, and as he fled, off-duty BP agent, who was working as synagogue security, shot at fleeing BG (missing BG but hitting BG's car).

The mayor said the congregation was targeted by "someone with hate in their heart ... towards our Jewish community and that just will not stand." The congregation "took security very seriously," he said.

Gore told reporters that the gunman was armed with an "AR-type assault weapon."

Authorities said an off-duty Border Patrol agent fired at the shooter as he was fleeing the scene, but didn't hit the suspect. Gore said it appears the agent, who the sheriff thinks is a security guard, hit the suspect's car. It is unclear why the suspect fled but it is possible his gun might have malfunctioned, the sheriff added.

The suspect fled the scene and called 911 to say he was involved and give his location, San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit said. A San Diego K-9 officer arrived and the shooter surrendered without incident, he said.

"What’s not known about the Poway Synagogue, is that the congregation is armed. The husband of Lori Gilbert- Kaye kept a wheel gun hidden in a cabinet. In the midst of the shooting, Mr. Kaye retrieved the gun and tossed it to an Off Duty Border Patrol Agent, praying during the events."

Wow! If the Rabbi was armed, why didn't he draw and fire? Or was he unarmed that day? If so, maybe God punished him by having his index/trigger fingers of both hands shot.

Why did the off-duty BP agent have to wait for the wheel gun? Wasn't he carrying off-duty. That makes it less likely he was voluntary/informal security, much less working as paid security.

Yet despite all of this, the BG's massacre was frustrated. Praise God!

Revolvers are still relevant, even if non-optimal. If only Lori's husband had carried it on him instead of keeping it in the (locked?) cabinet, she might be alive today.... (Sheriff Gore liberalized CCW issuance for San Diego Co residents about 2 years ago.)

Does anyone know if this synagogue was a "Gun Free Zone"?

Looks like the synagogue was part of Chabad-Lubavitch, a Hasidic congregation. I saw where one of the worshipers was a Sabra, therefore possibly ex-IDF. He is credited with grabbing a bunch of kids and taking them to safety, even though shot himself.

    Never again!

    Oh, a nut case...

I do realize it's a shame that worshippers should need protection, but let's face it, there is a reason that many folk left Europe to come here. There is a reason that Mormons moved from NY to SLC. Some people feel the need to persecute those of other faiths. Many times that takes the form of violence. As such, pray to the God of your choice, but remain vigalent.

"Love your neighbor, but keep your powder dry." Not sure who said it, but it still holds true...
