This more in line the OP. Often people in more modern times do not like to talk too much about how their countries were formed. In olden times the Hebrew scribes did not have problems with writing down what King David had done and I do not believe made any apologies for it.

Maybe some more of the discussion could address why that was so then and not now.

    EXCELLENT!!!

Brother, you have a way of getting us to look at things we normally would not.

Fact - Every nation was formed by spilling blood at one time or another.

Fact - Every religion or faith has been spread or been protected, by sanctioned blood spilling.

Fact - Until recent times, heroes were men who had distinguished themselves in combat - killer heroes - Earp, Murphy, Richtofen, Patton, etc. and not entertainers or sports players.

Fact - Boys, if left alone, unmolested by hairy legged liberal women or sunken chested liberal males, will default to shooting games, chase games and emulate killer-heroes.

In my own youth, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, our shows were Combat, Paladin, Bonanza. And our goals in life were to be strong and be good at fighting, and being men. Boys had tight haircuts and girls looked like girls. Roles were clear and while not universal, it was very unusual to see a boy in Home Ec class or a girl in Wrestling.

Columbus was a hero and there was grudging recognition of Ericson. The Crusades saved the Holyland, etc.

What changed and why is a great discussion.

This is where we came from and under it all we still are a killer ape. Just the means have changed.

Ostensibly an ally of the Philistines, David eliminated any witnesses that might blow his cover. Remember he was marked for death by his own king and was continuously on the run. The chroniclers are not necessarily in approval of this behavior, which was an operational necessity, any more than they approved of his feigning madness earlier.
More to the point is the Israelites' mandate from Yahweh to exterminate the tribes in Canaan, which they failed to do, with negative consequences that continue to this day for Israel--and for the world.

The devil is often in the details. I am not a bible scholar and can only comment on what you have stated and it is interesting.
The "chroniclers are not necessarily in approval of this behavior," or disapproval. They do not appear to be lying or covering it up. You also mention "the Israelites' mandate from Yahweh to exterminate the tribes in Canaan" which today is sometimes called genocide. Ok they did not do it, but the important thing is that it was not considered wrong to wipe out another group of people. Modern Jews had the tables reversed and they were exterminated during WWII and actually at other times previously during history.
Sounds like to me that "RAIDING, PILLAGING, AND THE LIKE" was not condemned by anyone during early civilization.

Not only "not condemned" but an accepted fact and often necessary for a culture's expected survival...the utter elimination of a competing and incompatible culture. Not something one will hear about in either a church or temple.
