Are you talking about mirage or trace? One is for reading the wind at distance and the other is the visual wake of the bullet as it passes through the air and can be used to spot hits and misses on non reactive targets or backgrounds. Trace is easier to see when its humid and I have had the best luck with my spotting scope or rifle scope on 15-18 power when spotting trace in a variety of conditions. As far as mirage for wind reading you can see it with the naked eye however magnification helps when reading at distance.
