In this case they did not have to use ask or subpoena a private company for info.

Years ago the first DNA genealogical testing companies had private databases that did not allow comparisons/matches with files from other companies.

This also meant there was no way for a scientist to compare modern dna held at these companies with ancient dna they were studying, or ethnic dna studies, or for anyone doing genealogy dna comparisons to compare dna from one private company with another private company.

GEDmatch was started as a free "open source" type website where dna files from private companies could be uploaded and compared with one another. So files from the private companies like AncestryDNA, 23andme, and FamilyTreeDNA could be uploaded by the individuals who originally took these tests and compared.

In this case scientists working for the police modified a dna file of the suspect so it was compatible with the formats used by GEDmatch and uploaded it. They then looked at matches and their family trees. Then they looked for males of the right age who lived in the area at the time the crimes were committed.

A dna file is a spreadsheet of numbers. Number sequences from one are compared with others to find matches. All the website did was compare numbers. These sequences of numbers came from your parents, grandparents, great grandparents and so on. You can't hide from that unless you are the only living descendant of a large number of ancestors.

FWIW I read last week that Vallejo sent evidence that might have the Zodiac Killer's DNA off to a lab to see if they can retrieve adequate DNA. They should find out in the next few weeks.

If so, they plan on following in Sac SO's footsteps wrt to the Golden State Killer and see if they can get an ancestry hit. If so, it took Sac 4 months from that point to track down the Golden State Killer. IOW, if we're lucky, they could ID the Zodiac Killer by Christmas. If he's still alive and if they can find him are separate issues.
