Good morning: I live in one of the three cities that are close together along the river here in the Four Corners of New Mexico. Aztec is 10 miles from where I live. Based upon local reliable sources, here is what I know:
Lone wolf, 20-22 year old male, probably a former student, entered the school at or shortly after 8 a.m. He pull a semi-auto handgun, believed to be a Glock, and started shooting in the hall. A high cheerleader was killed, and a young man who was a soccer player and otherwise involved in the school was shot as he started to run. The janitor heard the shots, yelled at the shooter and charged him unarmed. The shooter started running. After being chased a ways, but he turned the gun on himself.

The school went into lockdown very quickly. Aztec police were on scene and breaching windows to get in (everything was locked down) within one minute of the dispatch call. The shooter, based upon info I received, had several magazines on his person. The brave janitor, by attacking even though unarmed, probably prevented this tragedy from becoming a wholesale massacre.

In aviation there are three things you cannot use: runway behind you, altitude above you, and fuel back in the tank at the FBO. In self-defense: you cannot use skills you have not developed, a gun you do not have with you, and ammo that is still in the box.

    Hell yeah, janitor; nice work.

Aggression by ANYONE seems to be the solution to most of these, armed or not. Armed is better, obviously.

The link to the press conference a few minutes ago will follow:

He entered the school disguised as a student. Went to a second floor bathroom to get his pistol and gear (Glock 9mm) and numerous magazines out. Paco walked into the bathroom at that moment, and the bad guy shot multiple rounds, killing Paco. He then went into the hall where he saw and shot the girl.

He then proceeds forward looking for a classroom to shoot up. One classroom had a 74 year old substitute teacher who did not have a key to lock the door. (Lockdown was going very quickly.) She got the 16 students into an office/closet at the back of the room and barricaded it with a couch. BG came in, shouting he knew they were there, and shot through the wall, but no one was hit. He goes back to the hall, the janitor sees him and starts yelling, warning others, and following the bad guy. Bad guy is moving ahead, shooting randomly, and, possibly hearing the police shooting out the glass to get in or because of the janitor's continued pursuit, shoots himself.

Anyone wanna bet that the janitor gets fired? It would be a sure thing if he had hit the shooter with a broom.

I've been saying for a long time, arm the janitors!
I worked in pubic skools for many years. Most teachers lack character, but I never met a bad janitor.

I always got along better with Maintenance personnel than with teachers. Sure, there was the odd teacher who wasn`t a complete dick but the janitors and custodians were always the more interesting. Good to know it hasn`t changed. Bonus points for him. Any word on his condition? Will SI be offering rubbermaid cart carry options?

The only two people injured were the two students killed. (I don't count the BG.) The misfortune for Paco was a blessing for everyone else. If that young man had not walked into that bathroom at that time, the BG would have been able to enter and take control of a classroom per his original plan. Instead the shots that killed Paco and then Casey alerted the school which went into automatic lockdown.

He then entered a computer lab where a substitute teacher did not have a key to lock the door. Realizing that, she herded the sixteen students into a back office/storage closet, and barricaded the door with a couch. BG comes in, shouts he knows they are back there, and shoots through the wall, but he did not hit anyone. BG then goes back in the hall, the janitor arrives and starts yelling and warning people. The police at the press conference said that the janitor "followed" the BG as he went shooting random shots, but I have heard reports that he actually ran at him and the BG started running away, while probably firing random shots. BG killed himself about the point in time that the police were making entry.
