I have read that is the accepted way of cleaning cap and ball revolvers somewhere. Normally a creek or pond will do for the AK. What did blow my mind is the AR is much more resistant mud if the dust cover is kept closed and a mag is inserted in the gun. Stoner did know a thing or two for sure.

Hot tank worked great for new commie rifles packed in grease when I was working in a machine shop. Cleaned a lot of of guns for people that way.

I had a guy in the AK class in Jacksonville Florida in 2010 (IIRC) clean his in the down spout at the hotel during a torrential rain storm.....I had gone over to their room (3 or 4 guys who came to the class together) to hang out for a bit after class . While I was in there a "monsoon" hit and I jokingly told one of the guys who had just been asking about cleaning corrosive ammo residue from his AK to go outside and stick it under the down spout from the guttering.... and he did.....essentially had a "power wash" provided by lots of rain water and a pipe.
