    Same reason the Glock 34 is. But I defy you to find a Beretta that is open on the sides as well...and that anyone wants to actually shoot.

    All seriousness aside, the Beretta isn't really the counter example it appears to be at first. The slide is designed to be open and although it is not real clear the barrel is much closer to the sides of the opening and there is a lot less room for 'stuff' to get in there to gum up the works.

    Even the G34 has lots of room around the barrel as do most any other auto pistol slide with windows cut into it.

    And the 92FS uses a locking block. Why anyone would weaken a Glock slide where it locks is beyond me.
