Did some research and here is the ATF answer for the length of the buffer tube. The question is if it needs to be milled so it can't take a rifle stock to avoid the whole question of a short barreled rifle.

Yes, that is what I was trying to type...

You can not use a standard collapsible stock buffer tube because it can accept a stock readily. you will have to mill off the channel underneath the buffer tube in order for this to work. the length of the tube does not matter.

any way.. use a old buffertube, take it to a local machinist and have the channel mill off. go to Sav-On drug and buy the rubber plug for a kane and secure it to the back of the tube.. you should be good to go.

then again, the 5.56 even in 77gr shooting out of the 7.5 inch barrel will yield less impressive result in fragmentation. I think you have about 10-15m befor ethe velocity drops below the 2100 fps required for the heavier rounds. then again, oprn tip match can do some damage even if it drops below the required 2100fps. using the SMK 77Gr Operators in long range engagement are putting down tangos at extended distance out to 600+m.

    SMGLee,

I agree that the 7.5" is not the way to go, I am thinking about building one of these pistols but with a 10.5" barrel.

Do you think going to a 5.56mm chamber is a better way to go than a .223, due to the ability to acheive higher preassure and thus velocity?

    Yoni,

I highly recommend the 10.5 using mi-spec 5.56 chamber. shoot the 77gr SMK and you might have a champion in your hand.

I am not sure about your local law about having a vertical grip on a pistol... something to look into. I know that is a big no-no in Kalifornia.

It makes it an AOW in the ATF's eyes. Better have the tax stamp for that.

Vertical forward pistol grip makes the pistol into AOW according to ATF.

So what I am thinking is a 10.5" barrel chambered in 5.56 with a A3 upper and a Dr. Optic red dot sight. This will give me a weapon that will fit into a back pack. Carry 2 20 rounders in the pistol and extra 30 rounders in the back pack.

Since it is according to law a pistol you could carry it in your back pack and have your carry permit cover it. One of the problems I have with a rifle in the car is you have to leave it in the car and as such it is at risk for theft. With this grab and go.

A friend of mine were discussing this very concept the other day.

How about a single point sling, looped over the shoulder. You push the gun forward against the sling. No stock needed.

Did the SAS shoot MP5's this way at one time? Anthony will probably know.

Do you really need the crutch bumper. I mean its not exactly like you're shooting 3 inch slugs out of this gun.

Other than the buffer tube/ improvised stock, does this offer any advantages over the Kel-Tec plr-16?

I think the advantage over the Kel Tec plr-16 is that it can be fired from the shoulder as soon as it is deployed from your back pack, where the Kel Tec would need to have it's stock unfolded. I happen to view a folding stock as a matter for storage, not the way a weapon should be carried.

I never carried my micro Uzi with its stock folded, it had its stock open all the time for instant deployment.
