Default Concept Gun - AR Pistol....Rifle

While in Houston, I spoke to good friend and combat veteran Jim Navarro. At dinner we discussed a concept he is working on. In short, its a short barrelled rifle (SBR), but w/o the paperwork normally needed.

Picture an AR-15 pistol. Most of us scoff at this as a wannabe's gun. But Jim has given this some serious thought. One can replace the little bity "pistol" buffer tube with a CAR-15 type buffer tube and still be legal. It also improves function dramatically...or so I'm told.

This buffer tube is long enough to provide a suitable cheek weld as well. To keep it on the shoulder, simply add a crutch tip obtainable in any medical supply store. This provides a stock "toe" to mount into the shoulder for firing.

Add a flat top with a forward mounted Aimpoint, or as Jim has added, a Docter Sight, and you have the makings of a very serios urban gunfighting tool. And what is even cooler is that it is perfectly legal anywhere an AR-15 pistol is legal and available.

    Very interesting.

it would more compact than a AK with a folding stock, easier to hide...uhmmmm I like the idea, especialy to have with my bugout equipment ans since it is 5.56 my wife can handdle it and more important train with it. Nice idea to ponder.

Here in PR that would make it in to Rifle witch would make it illegal do to the barrel lenght, I don't now the laws in other places but I belive it would make it BATF illegal to have with out the proper permits.

    rwheet,

You could, but then the "nice good guys" in black who hate civilian gun ownreship would come and kick in your door one Sunday with their MP5s for having an unregistered short barreled rifle.;)

What sort of range would you limit this too? <100yds, <50yds?

Would you keep the 7 1/4 in bbl?

How does 5.56 perform out of these short barrel pistols?

    Sounds like a great concept.

I don't have all the answers, but it seemed like a very interesting idea. I suggested to him he go with a 10.5" Commando upper. There is lots of data on this barrel lenght as well as on the 11.5", the 14.5", and the 16".

On all of these I would look at it as a 50 yard urban gun.

Attaching anything to the tube so that can be used as a "stock" is starting to get into a gray area.

Anyone know at what point the "buffer and toe mod" becomes an illegal stock?

I'm just curious on where and how the line is drawn, by the powers that be.

I will also search on the "google" and see what I find.

Post the question at Subguns.com and you will probably get an answer pretty quick. I do not know FOR SURE what the answer is, but I have an idea. I also have an opinion/suggestion, but I won't post it in public.
