    Default The white american mastiffs

The Spanish, French, English, and other colonists brought large dogs to protect their homesteads and missions. They also brought wardogs that were darker dogs and were often brindled. The white ones in ther southeast went by different names with 'White English' being the most common name. Many of these were more bulldog like than mastiff and served the function of a catch dog (bulldog). The white mastiffs were protection dogs usually very low keyed. They protected livestock and the master's family. The more mastiff like ones for the males ranged from 76-120 bls with 90-100 lbs being common. Females a little smaller. A big point is the head. True mastiffs have reasonably long jaws. Many of the modern recreation has dome like heads and the face is pushed in a bit. There bodies are often extremely stocky. They are also selected to be big. Some top 200 lbs.
The white american mastiffs were dogs that were big enough to deal with the wild canines (red wolf) that were present in the Eastern United States in colonial times. Without contamination from the American bulldog (Breed type founded in 1970's based on white english and other breed mixing) are becoming rare and hard to find. I belong to a group that wishes to preserve this type of dog. Jager below lives not too far from me in Pace, FL, He is 95Lbs and a real gentleman and quite protective of his homestead. This is typical for such dogs. I have seen pictures in black and white from the mountains of italy from the 1970's showing mastiffs and they were not so different from Jager below and nothing like what people raise to sell in Italy today. If I breed my female again it will likely be to him.

This is a Cane Corso named Cork in Italy in 1978 before American destruction began. What do you guys see?
The fellow has rear dew claws which is a common trait in mastiffs.

Barnetmill, I'm with Boetman; have more faith in your insight than most others. My AKC GSD is fine with kids and even strangers around the house as long as I'm here. The rescue GSD (mix?) is like a bull in a china shop. Was a little leery when the grand kids came to visit. The youngest climbed all over him and he just laid there enjoying the attention.

I think anyone would be a damned fool to mess with a kid with a dog of nearly any breed. Loved the story of Max & the pic of Ms. Memphis and her brood. Keep the stories & discussion coming. Jager is a handsome gentleman.
I always have my primary weapon; it's right between my ears.

This is the key to raising most dogs, but not all and later I will speak of my search and why I ended up seeking out white english dogs.

Another American white mastiff from a few years ago. None of these are pure breeds and many are family lines that been maintained for generations. Some of the people are very private and do not want publicity.
Mark S. After H. H. comment on the etching , I had to hunt up the rangiest rawboned picture of Firehouse.:) This is him at 1 year old.

Not sure how to copy, but agree with Ahres. Just not kids. A dog can be leery of grownups etc. But must be soft with kids. I enjoy a good dog of any breed, all of them has good traits. I used to have three Jacks, went everywhere with me. Since our wolfpack grew from 1 to 4 , my interest in dogs have changed from loveyduffy doggie, to either it has a function or it goes. I care for my dogs, play with them, feed them etc but at the end, they are another tool in my armanent to protect my family. The moment the cons are more than the pros they go. Harsh? Probably. No free meals in Africa.

If my time must come, let it be when I am protecting my loved ones. Let there be a pile of brass scattered around me and a pile of my enemies at my feet. Let my slides be locked open on empty mags and my knife broken. Let my face be bloody from biting the throat of my last foe and let me be wearing a necklace of fresh ears. Take me to Your Heavens and let me hear the laughter of my children as they reenact the fight and I will rest peacefully.- Edelweiss.

Dogs that bite the right people or goblins are treasured.
