    http://leerdeperros.blogspot.com.es/...ogo-o.html?m=1

The Cuban Blood Hound in Florida 1840
The Cuban Bloodhound inherited all the main characteristics of the the Spanish pursuit dogs. In the beginning the Cuban Bloodhound was used for combat against the Indians. 'This singular race was characterized as one of rare aggressiveness. It was a dog of great desire in its job, of much tenacity and of fearless courage. Men feared facing it as it was common that the dogs succeeded to kill without difficulty. It's bite was particularly strong. It was distinguished from the other dogs also for its resistance and its churlishness. (Rudeness of manners or temper; lack of kindness or courtesy). They were '24 inches high and 36 inches long (or thereabouts), with a head, breast, fore-legs and shoulders like a light-made mastiff, and stout somewhat elongated, ears erect like a grey-hound (mostly cropped where they bend), and loins, croup, haunches, and tails like a greyhound, only thicker set. This combination, you may conceive, produces an animal of great nerve, strength, and agility, and such to all appearances, are these bloodhounds.' St. Augustine Herald, February-6-1840.

Tintype. Late 1860s. Possibly the earliest known 'photo' of a WE type. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?f...type=3&theater

Howsit guys. I want to teach my GSD to be a protection dog for the family. Dont want hoop jumping and that stuff, he must just rip the heathen that climb through the windows arm off. No trainers close to me so will have to do it myself. Some pointers and maybe reads would be a great help.

If my time must come, let it be when I am protecting my loved ones. Let there be a pile of brass scattered around me and a pile of my enemies at my feet. Let my slides be locked open on empty mags and my knife broken. Let my face be bloody from biting the throat of my last foe and let me be wearing a necklace of fresh ears. Take me to Your Heavens and let me hear the laughter of my children as they reenact the fight and I will rest peacefully.- Edelweiss.

Hey Boet! Been too long, haven`t seen you lately. I`m sure having a kid does that, hah. To be honest I couldn`t tell you much about training a dog (I`m surprised this thread took off like it did) but I`m more than sure Barnet is going to have some excellent insight.

I certainly have studied dogs, but I am cautious in telling one the best way to turn their dog into a protection dog. Some people innately can train dogs quite well (Natural Dogmen) and others simply cannot. I am not one of those that is gifted with managing animals. So my strategy was to pick dogs that will do what I want with minimal training.
Before you go further I advise to take a good look at the dog you have and evaluate what sort of behavior it has. If the dog shows any hostility to a small child even when the child provokes the dog, the dog goes. Is your dog naturally protective and does it challenge intruders? Make sure you have good material to start off with.
Frankly if I lived in south africa I would go out into the country side and find a rustic boerboel for guarding a homestead. I assume such still exist there. I would not get one of the modern ones that are quite common over your way these days. You might have to go to what ever they call Bantustans these days or farms in the middle of nowhere to find a family that still breeds them the old way. The old tyme boerboel looked long and lean, capable of running in the heat of the day and were more like american cur dogs.

Bottom line start with a good dog.

German shepherds and Malonois are dogs that are often trained work to with a handler. Some of them a quite smart and very trainable. Such 'police' trained may not be what you want. The dog will be expected to protect your wife and child when you are not home. That has be innate. So that is part of what you must evaluate. You want a smart. loyal dog that can figure things out the right way on its own.
Some smart dogs can figure out things that benefit them more than they do the master, the absolute loyalty must be there.
Second is since you are from south africa use your local resources since the training of protection dogs is well developed there.

Find a facebook page or a forum dedicated training protection dogs and join it. Make sure the it is a good one for your purposes.

An american black mouth cur dog looks not so different from the original boerboels. The major downside to them is they should have a yard or place that allows them to range about a bit.

Shot mate, I can get a historcal boelie, but i prefer a gsd. Ours are very soft with our kids and very obedient. I dont know if it will work. It has shown aggression before, with hair raised etc. it was when it picked up an unfamiliar noise outside. It also tends to go and lie with my wife and the kids where they are. And big plus dont shit in the house. Very nice dog.
