Hoo boy, don't want one of those. That's too much, lol.

They are actually great dogs. Have a female and she only bit me once :). She was fighting with another dog and I grabbed her. She reactively bit me then looked up at me with an oh shit look in her eyes when she realized what she had done. Absolutely is one of the best dogs I have ever had in my life. Those dogs become friends, not property.

No doubt—don't get me wrong, I would love a great dog like that, if trained well and in the right circumstances. Just not in an apartment, to be sure. Maybe on 8 or 10 acres, once my wife and I upgrade the living space on the attorney salary.

Okay, the bug has bitten me. Wife and I are looking to get a dog soon, after we tried one that would have been a great dog if we had a yard and just a bit more time to work with him. Found a 10-year-old Belgian Malinois mix at the shelter. Any health issues likely in a dog of that breed, that old? We just might take a look at her and several others this weekend. No backstory on any of the animals, so going into that very cautiously, but figured I'd ping knowing folks on here about red flags to watch for in that breed specifically.

Not sure how Mals behave when they're older, but they are an energetic breed. No, make that hyperactive. Picture a shorter lighter GSD on crack.

If she's ten and a mix she may be substantially mellower. A face to face, out of the crate, will tell you a lot.

"Shorter, lighter GSD on crack"—if this elderly chick hasn't mellowed considerably, definitely not a good dog for my wife and me. We'll see what a face-to-face might reveal.

I am very pro-malinois and can’t imagine not having one but I caution people all the time that they are a challenge!
I was very lucky my first one was an adult dog and by malinois standards very mello but he is still a commitment in required mental and physical stimulation. I work my dogs a lot and they still are never going to be trustworthy in some situations. There are a lot of malinois’ in rescue right now do to a lack of structure and outlet for their energy and drive some of these would be great “starter” mals but line up resources for training and tips and tricks prior to getting one to avoid disaster.
