The white english bulldog have been around in the southern US likely for centuries also likely disappeared from England many years ago. The squat, pushed in face dog that is today called an English Bulldog is not at the same thing. From 1850 an english bulldog: The picture below shows when the dog breeders first rescued the breed after it had just about died out when bullfighting was outlawed. The head is only a little screw up. Way too much being undershot for the lower jaw, but it still looked like a bulldog. They were experimenting with crossing pug into the mixture then to help modify the skull.

Interesting story out of England where a legend has perhaps been unearthed or perhaps not.
archaeologists might have uncovered a 16th century legendary hellhound.
Known by the name of Black Shuck – a name believed to derive from an old English word for black “demon”, the 7-foot tall dog appeared as a bringer of death in many tales from 500 years ago. In the 16th century, the inhabitants of the British Isles were horrified by the brutal deaths committed by this giant hellhound with burning red eyes.
It took about 500 years for archaeologists to uncover its earthly remains under the ruins of Leiston Abbey in Suffolk, in a nameless grave thirty inches deep, while several pottery fragments were covering its body. The massive dog skeleton was analyzed by a veterinarian who approximated its weigh at about 200 pounds when it lived, while measuring not less than 7 feet on its hind legs. http://ufoholic.com/7-foot-tall-hell...nastery-in-uk/

I think Cane Corsos are pretty fierce looking but are better hunting dogs rather than pure attack dogs.

The modern cane corsos have been changed considerably from what they once where. Below is a picture of what once was.
The old rustic dogs of many guard breeds have been modified for the appearances that people want. First thing everyone wants is bigger to really huge. Little attention is paid toward health and the proper behavior. Most of the mastiff type dogs were long, lean-muscular, big boned animals. !20 lbs was good wt for a male. Now they often are a lot bigger. Below is an example of a rustic dog. They tended to range from white to darker. Shepherd guard dogs of flocks tend to be white and the guard dogs for home and estate tended to be darker.
Legend: This is a Cane Corso named Cork in Italy in 1978 before American destruction began.
Edited to add: Legend 'Early 19th century tapestry. Likely English based on the house. Brindle mastiff killing a wolf along with his masters.'
Once again the mastiff is a long, lean, muscular with robust bone structure.
