Ill share a good article when I come across one. If you think about he application of these dogs you will start to under stand how much goes into them. These are dogs that have to have the ability to be dropped in crowded areas and maintain composure. In fact some agencies nerve test their dogs by dropping them in crowded areas of New York City.

On 2 different occasions in the last couple days I've seen what might have been White English dogs. That's unusual or this thread has made me more observant, differentiating between the various breeds and mixes. I've been really interested in them after what I've read here. Might stop and ask the owners or get a pic if I see 'em again.

I need to mentioned some acronyms and will explain
WE or white english: these were basically rural farm and yard dogs with their ancestors dating back to colonial era dogs imported from europe. They were never a 'pure breed'. they were a working type. mostly being lower in drive compared to other mastiff dogs commonly found in the USA.
People have always mixed in other dogs into the white english dog population. This can change the behavior.

A WE dog that has been recently mixed with a bully breed like american bulldog or pitbull is best called an OSW or old southern white. many people do not know the difference. So what I am saying is that what the owner tells you may not be correct. He may believe it is WE and it is not. I have seen some good american bulldogs and have read of good alapahas that behave like WE and that is because they have WE in them.

but yes go and ask. If you can take a picture of different profiles, especially the skull. Post them on the Old White English Preservation Society with all other information ask for confirmation as to what it may be. If you are genuinely interested apply for admission to https://www.facebook.com/groups/403742913062227/ tell heather that the owner of Memphis and Ginger vouches for you. Some of the members on occasion do a breeding and dogs are given or sold to other members of the group. i have a dog that is due very soon. four of the pups are already spoken for (Neighbor wants the runt, one for a friend whose old dog recently died, and two females go to the owner of the stud) and the rest will go to members of our group.

Wow! Thanks, Barnet! I've two big dogs now; an AKC GSD that goes 125#, and a rescue that appears to be a GSD, very stocky at 85#. Both are good watch dogs but don't know how far they'd actually go to protect us. Not overly concerned, though. Anyway, don't expect to be in the market for several years as both of mine are about 4 yrs old.

I've been lucky with the dogs I've had; lab/GSD was a great dog, smart as hell. Labradoodle was great, laid back but protective, especially of the wife. He'd just nonchalantly stand between her and any stranger. When he barked (rarely) the house shook! I always thought that if anyone grabbed the wife, there wouldn't be any warning, just a bite.

I guess that's what I like about the WEs. They seem like they'd be easy going, observant, alert and ready to act immediately.

Xena (Warrior Princess). 10-months old. Czech breeding. Grandpa protects an ex-president, older siblings are with TSA and Border Patrol. Our first German Shepherd. Very smart, very sweet but very protective of family.

What French mastiffs used to be: long and much leaner than the current Dogue de Bordeaux. Jaws and heads are long.

RPG: Nice looking gal there! Looks ready to mix it up!

Barnet: those remind me of Great Danes, especially the heads. Perhaps the Danes are a bit longer.
