Gen 3 and Gen II + differences are a Filmed vs. Filmless tube. Filmed tubes can handle a little more recoil impulse than filmless designs. Think AN/PVS13 by L3 that is milspec vs an ITT Pinnacle..They can both be OMNI VIII tubes, but based on halo numbers etc, the filmless shows slightly better contrast resolution. I have the L3 design and have looked at the others....It doesn't matter for my purposes and I wouldn't change my decision today. When manufacturers combine the PVS14 and AN/PAS-29 COTI thermal technology into one Monocular then you're talking something worthwhile IMO, but then again you're in the 8-10K range based on today's separate unit prices.

    It's really all about preferences.

So what of the compatabilty with self illuminated sights? Trijicon ACOGs, red dots. And what color aiming reticle is best to be comparable?

ACOGs and similar require a weapon mounted unit to work well. Weapon mounted units are less desirable unless you plan to simply take a position and hold. For helmet mounted units, a red dot is best. As I wrote, you can also use the tritium sights with some work.

OK, so what are the differences? Pluses and minuses, disregarding cost differences.

I think all you have to do is read the descriptions. That is what I did. For the price, the PVS-14 cannot be beaten. With the 10% its like $500 off.

I'd like to visually understand the differences being offered. The images usmc1986 provided are helpful. Hope to see more examples.
