I had a great "Black and Tan" at a party the other night. The mix was 6 ounces of "Fat Tire" Ale and, of course, 6 ounces of Guinness.
I was somewhat dubious of the concoction, but let me tell you it was pretty damn smooth.
Yes, I know a proper "Black and Tan" should be made with Bass Ale and "Vitamin G", (Guinness Stout).
BTW, It seems that the Ale component of the beverage must be of a higher specific gravity than
the stout, so not every beer is a suitable partner with the Guinness.
I have also heard that the B&T "pro" will pour the Ale in first and the Guinness in second. The pouring of the Guinness should also be accomplished with the use of a spoon into the mix glass, (A long-handled spoon works best,... for example an iced-tea spoon), so that you get the separation of the two different beers .
So gents, here's my question: What is your favorite "Black and Tan" recipe?
BTW, I have had a "Black Castle" or two in my time...a mix of Newcastle Ale and Guinness. Excellent stuff...

Black Velvet (Snake Bite?) is a good one too, pear cider and Guinness.

I like Blacksmiths, Guinness and Smithwicks or my favorite twist, Extra Blacksmith-Guinness Extra Stout and Smithwicks. That new Guinness Black Lager is similar in taste to a Blacksmith, however. Check out the Lagerhead Brutul, http://www.brutul.com/, they also have recipes on their website. I bought my dad one. Honestly, after we have a few black and tans, we don't bother using the tool and just mix the beer in the glass :biglaugh:.

Best Black & Tan I have ever had was at Epcot at the Rose and Crown Pub. Everything was UK strength. Awesome.

:finger: You should go to Raglan Road Irish Pub in Downtown Disney, great beer, best bread pudding I've ever had and live music and dancing on a stage that was the pulpit from a church in Ireland.

Learn something new every day here in that black and tan is a good drink. I had thought that a Black and Tan was either a dog or a member of the troops brought in by the English to fight the Irish Republicans during the 1920's.

Yes, I've heard that it's unwise to order a "Black and Tan" in Ireland as it might be construed that you're making a statement about your support for the "Black and Tans", British paramilitaries who fought the Irish independence forces in the 1920's. That would be like ordering a drink called "The General Sherman" in an Atlanta bar.
In Erie, it's best to order a "half and half"....although, if you're ordering from a barmaid, that could be construed as something else again.....

Some asians might consider such a dish to be bom vivant eating.
Sort of a side question which culture is most knowledgeable about mixed drinks? I am not asking who consumes the most alcohol since that would be northern europeans, but who knows how to enjoy it the best.

Another good half and half is Guinness and Harp.
^^This.^^ My first, and for many years only, exposure to Black 'n' Tans was the Harp iteration. Which I favor 'cuz it's pure Irish.

In Ireland most people use either Smithwick's Ale or Harp to make a "half and Half". While people over here often use Bass Ale as the base beverage, the Irish don't think too much of mixing their beloved Guinness with an English beer.
I believe that if you order a "half and half" in Ireland you will get a Harp and Guinness drink. This is understood by most bartenders because Guinness Brewery owns Harp.
Lastly, here is an exhaustive list of "Black and Tan" recipes:

I used to make them often with Deschutes Brewery Black Butte Porter and either Mirror Pond pale Ale or Fat tire when I wanted something softer.
Guinness is too mellow for a proper black and tan.

I like the Snakebite too but I prefer apple cider and more Guiness than cider.

I have had a black & tan with Guinness & Sam Adams Lager that was pretty good.
Speaking of Guinness, I had some of the new Guinness Black Lager tonight. It was ok. Nothing special. But i chased it with a shot, or two  , of Bushmills and it tasted much better!
