So I get this note from my wife relating a conversation with the man cub today. Guess why I have not bought him a chemistry set!?!
"Don't put that spoon in the microwave," I tell my son.
"Don't worry," he says. "Unfortunately I'm not a moron in that way."
"Ummm..." I say. "You mean to say 'fortunately' son."
"No, I don't," he tells me.
"I mean unfortunately. Because I really would like to see what would happen."

Find him an old microwave to test it! He might be a budding pyrotechnics expert! Besides we all know that boys rarely listen to "don't do _____", they need to find out for themselves.

if you want to give him a small taste and don't have an old microwave... try an old cd-r or scratched disc you don't mind trashing. Throw it in the microwave for 5 seconds, label down, data side up.
also, a grape, cut in half, with the interior upwards like a bowl.

He has seen me kill CDs for OPSEC's sake. Knowing him, he wants to throw that spoon in and see which dies first, the microwave or the spoon. Have no idea where he gets that...

Know what the amazing thing about the male species is?
That we survived long enough to procreate.

Can you even still get a "real" chemistry set for kids? I would expect that in today's legal environment, they would be dumbed down to near uselessness...

I used to have a plastic coffee mug with the foil USMC sticker on it. Nuked a cup of coffee one morning and the light show was fantastic. No damage noted, but we didn't do that again.

The uranium ore is all listed as "Sold Out." :disappointed:
I've never tried a CD in the microwave, only the occasional accidental spoon. Thanks for the suggestion!

Putting a spoon in the microwave sadly won't do anything... There's no surfaces for the electrons to arc across like there is with fork tines.... :nerd:

All I know is that there was a spoon handle sticking out of my instant oatmeal and there was some flashing and a deeper hum and I hit the stop button.
There's a lot texture on the handle, though, roses and the like, or, maybe it was close enough to the side of the microwave to arc?

Bring it back? It never left!
ALthough, I prefer Fpoons to sporks.

do they make metal ones? That'd be awesome and it would simplify dishwashing...

Awesome! Need one for my bug out kit --- PRONTO!
This reminds me when we got the go ahead to issue hollowpoint bullets.
I took a bunch of different rounds and went to shoot some goats.
My kids wanted to go with me.
They loved it, they helped me cut the goats open look at the damage and see what the recovered bullets looked like.
However today as a grown woman my daughter claims this event is what caused her to become a vegetarian.
Her husband hates me for this, since she will not cook meat.

So here I sit, operating the computer with one hand, and my 11 day old son asleep on my left arm. The good life is mine.

My teenage idiot (I say that with love) and his best friend bought a microwave at a garage sale.
Why? Was my question.
To see what we can blow up, was the answer I got.
LOL ok. Not in my house or garage. I have a long extension cord. Get as far into the yard as you can. Use eye protection.
Then I went to work.
All they managed was wrecking the microwave and making some sparks.

Now why didn't I think of the extension cord when my old microwave went on the fritz? It still worked, just not very well. But I think it would have been worth some experimenting. Probably I didn't think of it because I'm not as immature as my wife says I am!
Although, when our fire extinguishers at church expire, I do let my kids experiment on each other to find out how they're supposed to spray a fire. Start at the feet and spray up...
Congrats, Netpackrat, on the newborn!

Thanks. He's sure a cute little guy, looks a bit like his mom's little brother. Appears to have my hands and long fingers though. 8^)

This is why my wife is currently cooking up our 3rd little barbarian. My son made me so very proud the other day. He was with me in church and, during the meet and greet, he went up to Mamma J (an 84 year old widow) and said "I love you Mamma J" and gave her a hug - she cried she was so happy.

Our oldest is 25, she is a trauma nurse at a level one center just south of our home. Our youngest is 21 next week, he is a medic and currently enrolled in the local municipal police academy. More importantly, they're both fine young adults, hard-working, honest, and respectful of their parents and grandparents. Raising two wonderful young people like that makes one feel as if one's life was/is worthwhile (although their Mom deserves all of the credit :veryhappy:).
