As most of you, I truly enjoy listening to classical music at times as it can be quite relaxing.
Sometimes while drinking a nice glass of wine and placidly smoking a good cigar.
But as I am also a very visual person I found the link below to be a good way to properly enjoy those relaxing sounds.
Some of you may have seen this before but I'm sure you'll still like it.
And if you haven't seen it before, then you're really going to like it.

I can only stand classical music when it is either live at a concert hall, or associated with a live orchestra performance on a TV.

:biglaugh: That comment reminds me of the time I asked an old friend of mine from MS if he considered his family as rednecks. He scratched his beard and rubbed his pot belly as he said, "Well......I don't know if we's rednecks.........but we's hicks!!! :biglaugh:
Great finds on the music!

I've been smitten by the 1940's Glenn Miller music as of late.

I've loved classical music since I was a baby.
Shostakavich, Vivaldi, Mozart, Grieg, Wagner, Beethoven, all have a place in music I've enjoyed. There's something about kicking back with a cigar, good book, bit of scotch and listening to the classics.

"Cultured Warrior" is an interesting term related to music. Speaking as a musician, music is an expression of culture. Classical, country, rap, jazz, gospel..all of them grow out of groups of people who value certain things over others, which is at the heart of what makes a culture. Enjoyment of every musical genre shouldn't be considered a prerequisite, but the ability to appreciate the fact that a particular genre is an expression of a larger culture or sub-culture speaks to the intellectual and cultural maturity of the cultured warrior. You may hate everything a particular culture stands for, but that's beside the point. If you would learn about a culture, examine its art forms carefully.
My tastes are pretty diverse, but I really dig acapella jazz. Anybody watching The Sing Off? Afro-Blue is goodness...

I just finished a (required humanities credit) music appreciation class. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I like classical music after I was educated (just a little bit) on it. I'm more of a country music/jazz kind of person. I love Nora Jones, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Stevie Ray Von, and music of that ilk. Jazz, blues, country, classic rock is where my tastes lie. Those are cultured genres as well, IMHO. I'm in the beginning phases of putting together my classical collection. I used to live in Greenville Mississippi and I miss going to the Mississippi Blues Festival (http://www.deltablues.org/home.php). I don't think classical music will replace my preferred tastes but it will be a part of my music listening from now on.

Hahaha . . . guess that makes classical in my family along the line of Styx, Bob Segar, and George Thorogood.

I listen to beethoven and mozart when working out. It's works out your brain as you work out your body.
My dad got me into classical at a very young age. I have loved it all my life.
I understand the cultural backdrops of some classical music, and know that some was written by elites for elites using money that they probably didn't earn through honest business ventures. But, it is an interesting voyage through history, listening to it. I love baroque. I love ancient church hymns and chants. I especially love the chants - this is probably due to me being Greek Orthodox. In the Unofficial WT soundtrack thread, someone posted the Templar chant, which I though was especially awesome.

My dad was a blues guitarist, so I grew up on guys like John Lee Hooker, T-Bone Walker, and Buddy Guy. They were my first love, musically, and I still go back and visit them from time to time. From there I branched out and discovered the iconic country greats like Willie, Waylon, Johnny, and Merle. Johnny Cash especially has a lot to offer to the Warrior who cares to listen. Not sure if either genre can be considered "cultured," but they're certainly representative of my culture .

I've been watching this thread a little bit and am happy to see the Jazz afficianodos are chiming in. I have a wide variety of music that I enjoy. For the cultured warrior, I would reccomend the following Jazz artists/albums:
Ella Fitzgerald
Emilie-Claire Barlow - Melo & relaxing. Great for dinner with the wifey.
Mingus Big Band
Thelonious Monk
For those who want to get an intro into Jazz and want to impress their ladies, I would suggest a 3 disk series from Verve. It is called "A Night Out with Verve". The disks are Wining, Dining and Dancing - great for showing your better half a good time.

Jazz is pretty fantastic stuff. I played jazz trumpet for a few years, but was never very good at it. I'll put out the trumpet occasionally and play some Louis.

I haven't played in 25 years. To me Dizzy is still the trumpet king. I like Fats Navarro but I am partial to Big Band and Swing Era Jazz. My oldest daughter is a bass player in high school jazz band. I love listening to her practice.

I'm also very fond of Civil War songs, Union and Confederate alike, and have a bunch of Civl War CDs in my music collection. There's the obvious, well-known ones like "Battle Hymn of the Republic," "Dixie," "Battle Cry of Freedom," "Tramp! Tramp! Tramp!" and "Bonnie Blue Flag" and there's also lesser-known songs like "The Irish Volunteer" and "Song of the Confederate Irish" to name but a few.

I can't believe that in a discussion of music for cultured warriors that John Phillip Sousa and all those great marches from the pre-WW1 era hasn't come up.

Dizzy Gillespie is awesome. Miles, Coltrane, I like that stuff.
I don't really listen to that stuff to enjoy listening to it, because, admit it, sometimes that stuff just isn't pleasant on the ears. However, if you get past listening to it, and get into feeling it, it's awesome.
@ Kabar, I've played my share of Sousa through High School. It's practically required learning.

I enjoy the drone zone and spynet on shoutcast. Other than that, I am a huge fan of Metallica, Hank Jr, Hank III, Down, Mayhem, and anything the boys from Immortal put out(I, Demonaz, etc.) Great warrior stuff.

I can listen to and enjoy just about anything but rap crap.
I used to play the trumpet and think just about anyone that did tried jazz. It is like a magnet for a horn LOL.
My first real intro to classical was a grammer school trip to hear the WV Symphony and loved every second of it.
I grew up around country and bluegrass bars (ever listen to someone that can make a banjo talk? If so you know what I mean) and even played in a rock band.
Just about everywhere I've been the sound of music would take me to a new adventure. I have often been the only American and more often the only white man in some of these places. Go in, sit down, order a drink and let them know I loved the music. Then don't overstay LOL

I grew up with ZERO music in my life until I was well into Jr. High.
I have found that this musical genre is what "speaks to me" to the greatest extent.
Blues, Blues Rock, some Jazz are the things I have listened to the most. Can't seem to get into Country although much of what I think of as Country music is clearly Blues based?
Although I've come to the conclusion that I don't 'hear' music in the same way that others do after a number of years of playing Bass and taking lessons.
I'm sure that I am far from "cultured". OTOH, I couldn't be less concerned about that.
Proof that one doesn't have to be cultured to have impeccable taste. Musicians do hear music differently. I dabbled with the bass just enough to realize that. My brother inherited all of the musical talent in the family, though. I am merely an educated listener, but I'm OK with that .

I agree with the classical music and often listen to it in a similar manner to Shadowdancer. Recently, however, I have added the Taiko drums to the IPOD and listen when I don't want to relax but rather during a run or a workout.

If you like Taiko, there is a Scottish band named Albannach. Imagine Taiko with a Piper. These are both Martial Drummers.
We took our little one to see Albannach a year ago and still wants to hear there CD's.

For me, music is a motivator...a scene setter...a relaxing agent...
I enjoy various genres of music...my favorite is rock & roll from the 60s, 70's 80's & 90's...
But classical...classic jazz from the 40'ws, 50's & 60's...certain country styles...all are part of the collection and have their place...
Reggae, soul, zydeco also have their place...
I guess its like good weapons...I have my favorites, but I really like a variety...

I'm also very fond of Civil War songs, ....
Then if you haven't found them yet, check out the 97th Regimental String Band. For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lW9pv8gaGGM&list=PLAA2B69272E8854C6&index=6 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZuGQJVftsk&feature=BFa&list=PLAA2B69272E8854C6

+1 for the Buena Vista Social Club
I can dance salsa and am slowly developing an affinity to latin music. It's fun for people to see me dance and then they later find out I am a CCW/"competitive shooter" - watching their heads figuratively explode is the highlight of the moment.

I was a Music Major in a former life... love classical. Do you know that listening for one hour has been show to temporarily raise your IQ and learning to compose complex music raises it permantly.. I love all music, lately I am on a serious Country kick.

I don't know about classical music raising your IQ (maybe your ability to concentrate) but I do know that a large percentage of software and other engineers are amateur musicians.

Is Dragonforce is to be included here? How about Nancy Sinatra, Johnny Horton, Sgt. Barry Sadler.
Iron Maiden? My fave hard core classical music: Wagner, Beethoven, Kodaly, and Rameau.

I have not heard about raising IQ but I have read that using Baroque music while studying is supposed to enhance learning.
