Man food, comfort food(hate that term),late night snack, whatever you want to call it.Im talking about that once a week or once in a great while food or snack that you enjoy. Its the food you eat when your're reading a good book,or just before a late night stogie,or watching a good ol' western or war movie.
To give you an idea what I mean:
Earlier this evening I sat down to read Notes From the Tilt-O-Whirl by N.D. Wilson.Next to me sat a plate of cheese.I love good cheese. This plate of goodness,my "once in a while after a long week of work need to relax and unwind food".Tonight it was local fare.Trailhead Tomme and Campfire cheese and a chunk of No Woman. Some meat from Salumi and a Vlasik pickle with a glass of Jack D and Dr Pepper.Thats how I unwind.....How 'bout you?

Carbs... Good pasta and hearty sauces, that's what i like for my man food, or meat loaf. Most people make fun of it but I love it.

]Bosnian Suho Meso, or plain old Smoked Beef. In its wrapper it appears to be a shriveled up steak. When opened and thinly sliced it turns into tender, smokey , beefy heaven! Paired with Polish smoked sheep cheese and a lighter beer; say a Tsing Tao or King Fisher. Just plane Wow.

I usually eat pretty clean but I really enjoy a good brat with sauteed or grilled onions and peppers, a really spicy mustard, and a cold Belgian Quad.

Always grilled for me...I have been without adult supervision since 1992. (when I got divorced) So the grill is the perfect tool for cooking for one. Or two, as I have been dating a lot since '92! So red meat usually gets the nod, but chicken and pig get time too...to me, I guess Man Food is meat!

If it doesn't include animal flesh it better be something truly special. Nothing beats a big, juicy artery-clogging steak, RARE, and a baked sweet potato on the side--butter only. Next day's run/bike is gonna suck, but dang....

I make a mean Biscuits and Sausage Gravy for breakfast some mornings.

And there's always the good old Italian sausage sub.
http://i446.photobucket.com/albums/qq184/PistolWhipped_2008/PICT0234.jpg
Or a Cuban sammich. Roast pork, ham, swiss, pickles, and mustard, press grilled on a crust roll. I don't think I've ever had a bad one. A few messy or ugly ones, but none that were bad. Plus, when you eat them, you can hear Mohammed rolling in his grave.

And with all man food, you need proper accoutrements to go with it.

My favorite hours d' oeuvres ( can't stand the word) is a Triscuit with grilled Jonsonville Brat. extra sharp cheddar cheese a pickled jalapeno with a small amount of dijon mustard... I was halfway through a half rack of bridgeport IPA when I thought it up and have made it at probably 10 or so gatherings since. The Men love them, women.. not so much...

I have to say that my favorite, sit-in-front-of-the-TV-and-watch-a-movie snack food is hot popcorn with real butter. Anyone who puts margarine on popcorn should be flogged (sorry Mom...). Dinner tonight is sausage gravy over homemade sourdough bread toast along with a side of broccoli, fresh out of the garden. Later, I'll make the popcorn and boot up "Thor". FOR ASGAARD!!!!!!!

Here in The Mountain State, we have a wonderful tasting seasonal wild onion that we colloquially refer to as ramps. Throw them in a skillet with some boil-fried potatoes and bacon. Man there's nothing like it.

Smoked sausage and potatoes fried up in an iron skillet. I may or may not throw in some scrambled eggs or a can of pinto beans.
Eggs in the morning and the beans in the evening...usually in that order but.......

It may not sound like heaven to some but last night I took two hamhocks, some white beans, carrots, onions, celery, and garlic, then chopped a pound of bacon. Put them in a dutch oven and let it stew overnight. Had it for lunch today with some fresh, hot, homemade french bread. It's like heaven for me.

Bro, I live just above the Mason/Dixon and have them growing on the farm. The only food that I can smell in my socks; even garlic does not do that.

Come on, the ultimate "man food" has got to be PIZZA!!! Like sex, when it's good, it's really good, but when it's bad, it's STILL pretty good!

Wild onions are huge among the tribes here in OK. We have wild onion dinners by the dozens every spring. I let a couple of friends from my tribe on to my secret wild onion honey hole each spring, but only under the threat of death if they tell off where it's located. Wild onions fried in bacon grease with eggs is soul food for our NDN people.

Thus may sound really strange. But I love a can of green beans as a snack. I'll sit down, read, and eat a big ol can of green beans. I think it brings me back to my childhood as I loved green beans in the school lunches.
Ribeye, wasabi, and a lettuce leaf.

Can't argue with a Ribeye, or just about any other steak.
Or bacon, lots and lots of bacon.
Or biscuits and gravy on the very rare ocassion.
But I do have to throw chili dogs in the mix. Sabrett's or Nathan's dogs and a homemade chili sauce.
Teckomando - that sounds good! Going to have to give it a try.

Can't do proper sweetbread w/o brains :) Of course I like head cheese, now only from hogs because of mad cow.

Chicken fried backstrap, fired okra, roasted vegetables, home made gravy and biscuits. Ice cold brew to chase it.

If we ever get a large group together in the U.P. I can make my beer brats with green peppers and onions this has been a favorite at the last two company picnics.
I use my turkey fryer and use two cases of the cheapest beer I can find I boil them until the brats start to split and then I throw them on the grill to brown them up. Then I put half in a pan of beef broth with the onions and peppers and half into a large pot of sour kraut and keep both on low heat to keep everything hot and ready to serve.

Any meat that's properly prepared cooked for it's type.
Though some good pasta, any type is okay again if it's made right for what it is.
Fresh baked bread too.
Good European style cheese, of various types.
Home made heavy soups or stews.
Quality chessese.

Ya'll are making me hungry. My ex-wife has a peach tree that grows the sweetest peaches I've tasted since I lived in GA. Occasionally I like to make some bread, grab a pear, one of my ex's peaches, some cashews, my mom's home made cheese, and some grape juice. Then, I'll take a long hike and sit on Ben Lomond Peak and look out over the valley and eat. It's always a moving experience...even downright spiritual.
