View Full Version : Really? A Monocle?

I have enjoyed excellent vision all my life, but now in my mid-40's I find myself holding the menu out a little further or squinting a bit. So I mentioned to my girlfriend that I might need some help, and that I thought a Monocle could be the answer. She says I will look like Mr. Peanut and dismissed my suggestion. While I know she might be right, I still would like a source to buy a Monocle. Is it still elegant, or a cast off from days gone by?

This is what I thought:

It's warrior fashion. Maybe not for the battlefield.

OK, maybe not really. But maybe the more Scotch I pour tonight, the more sense it makes. They are really practical...WT Forums exist to bust up classical thinking. Is the Weaver stance with a 1911 the right answer? It was before I landed on this Forum...so convince me that the Monocle is not the answer. Think of this as an exercise in searching for the best answer...I am not saying the Monocle is the right solution...I am saying that we need to be open to all options to stay true to the WT reason for being. Besides, Mr. Peanut is pretty elegant in my opinion. Canes are another topic I suspect.

So is the fact the best source is out of the UK enough to convince me it is the wrong answer?!?!

Yeah, ok, if it is trendy I am quite sure it is the wrong answer. What was I thinking?

I dunno, the steampunk movement seems to like them. You could dress all Victorian and rock that monocle!

Seriously though, pulling anything off is all about attitude. If you want it go for it.

Admitt you are aproaching geezerhood and buy a set of readers.

Hitting Fifty to me meant I had beat Darwin and did my best to fill the gene pool with Warriors.

Monocle ? Why stop there ? Why not get yourself a deerstalker cap and a big ass magnifying glass like Sherlock Holmes ?

Pipes are elegant...you might be on the right track there...only problem is it will spoil my "grey man" image. Everyone would notice me with that get up!

You must have the right attire to make good use of your monocle (T-shirt, not good). It needs to be in a breast pocket so you can access it easily. This is certainly less bulky than having a glasses case that you have to carry around and protect. The monocle, being flat, is easily concealed and takes up zero space. Just need a slim, flat leather case (or even kydex).

If you're in a T-shirt you need to wear a vest to house your monocle. I see no problem with it. I think they are kind of neat.

Many people have one eye that is better than the other. For instance, apparently I have an astigmatism on one eye, but not the other. So I'm a monocle candidate also.

The late Victorian/Edwardian era of men's clothing is one of the apexes of pleasing fashion, if you ask me. So don't forget the cape!

And your cane, to beat ruffians and blackguards in the street! + http://edwardianpromenade.com/amusements/the-martial-art-of-sherlock-holmes/

I'm a big fan of P.G. Wodehouse novels so if you want to look like Sir "Gally" Gallahad or Lord Emsworth--I say go for it!

A top hat could make a new method of concealment, but it could never be pulled off without a monocle.

A monocle is an interesting idea... but... I took a stroll through the internet, and the examples I found seem to run to two extremes:

All the tough guys look like this:

All the others tend to look like this:

Prussian co-opted by the Nazis and possible fugitive from a war crimes tribunal, or lunatic.

Your choice.

Historical note: The kraut in color, Saucken, had a reputation for being a serious bad-ass, dissed Hitler to his face and got away with it, but I doubt many people know that, and anyway he still fought for the Nazis.

If you find a local source let me know, we can both wear them. I DO agree its a matter of proper dress, though. I doubt you could pull it off with jeans and dirty sneakers; but with a suit, maybe even tweeds and a blackthorn cane, and of course a large bore revolver

The monocle goes well with a dueling scar. Very rakish. :biglaugh:

I know this is bringing up an absurdly old thread, but was out on the town today and suddenly realized that one's top hat would solve my ongoing problem of concealing Glock 33 round magazines!
