What was your first ATV

Mine was a 1990's Yamaha Timberwolf 250, I started on it when I was 12 years old. And it still works to this day even though it has been semi-retired from duty.

It is more of a casual recreational vehicle now, while its newer counterparts handle the serious hunting and work. It is still a good rig and has a history to it. When I look at it I dont just see an old 4 wheeler, I see all the adventures and trips I have had while riding it.

Like being 40 miles from the road hunting caribou out on the tundra. I had to stay up for over 30 hours and log over 100 miles as I made multiple trips to haul out two caribou before they spoiled. I remember starting to fall asleep and then I would wake up right as I was about to drive over the edge of a cliff. It was rough at the time, but I look back at it and smile, it was a good time and one of my favorite memories with that four wheeler.

Honda 250R with a red seat. Why do I mention the seat? Because I got a $400 discount by not getting the Blue seat everyone wanted. I thought the RED one looked better anyway!

Two stroke Kawasaki 250 dirtbike...my folks got some land while I was in college. So I got my old man to buy a dirt bike, knowing he would ride it. So he got hooked on how fun it was, which paved the way to me buying a Triumph 650 Bonneville streetbike. I figured once he was on my side, he would convince my mom!

'98 Yamaha Banshee- Pretty much did everything you weren't supposed to do... Pulled wheelies through stop signs, drove on the highway at night when the traffic was quiet, rode through a park on a few occasions and had people threaten to call the cops once or twice.... All because there wasn't anywhere to easily ride really, at least not until after we moved out in the boonies.

Kawasaki KLT200B1 (solid axle version). I still have it. It still runs. However, after buying its replacement in 1986 the 1983 3 wheeler just didn't "do it for me" anymore. It was solid, only let me down once (chain broke) in the 3 years I road it heavily and it was fun to ride (again, till I got its replacement - a 1986 Honda 350X, with everything but electric start).

We used the Kawasakis for fun riding, for hauling trailers of wood or camping gear. We hauled our deer out of the woods in those trailers. We road year round, summer heat and winter snow. Its unbelievable where a 3 wheeler will go because of less weight and less resistance pushing the single wheel and forks through the mud/snow. If it does get stuck, a 328 lb. 3 wheeler is much easier to pick up and move sideways than a 500 or 600 lb. 4 wheeler.

Okay, I’ll show my age here. My first ATV wasn’t an ATV because they weren’t going to be invented for a couple of decades. Back when I was about ten years old, the old man built us a couple of Tote Goats (kind of a forerunner to dirt bikes, but really slow by comparison).

When I was about twelve years old, the old man dropped a friend and me off at the trailhead at the end of the road in one of the canyons in the Wasatch Mountains east of Salt Lake City. We loaded our two Tote Goats up with our camping gear, rode them into the back country and spent the next week camping in the top of the Wasatch Mountains. Every couple of days, we’d check in with the old man at the trailhead. Other than that, we were on our own. We spent the week exploring the trails that wound around the tops of the mountains.

After the Tote Goats, the old man bought me a 90cc Bridgestone motorcycle when I was fifteen. I racked up about 750 miles riding it around the city (before I had a driver’s license) before the cops caught me and told Dad he couldn’t let me ride it any more until after I got my license.

After that I got a Honda CL450 (Scrambler) motorcycle that I used to explore back roads and trails in the Great Basin.

Later on, my wife and I bought a Yamaha DT250 (for her) and a DT400 (for me) that we used to explore the mountains and red rock country in Utah. Our younger son started riding in front of my wife, on her gas tank, when he was 18-months old while our older son rode behind me. As they got older, they progressed through a Suzuki JR50, a Yamaha GT80 and a Yamaha IT175. The boys still have our old DT250 and DT400. About ten years ago, my wife and I moved on to the Yamaha Kodiaks we currently ride.
