For my money it's hard to beat a Punch Robusto, although there and many good brands.

Oliva Serie G, any size shape in natural or maduro, but my favorite of them is the Special G natural. Arturo Fuente Chateau Fuente Sun Growns, Arturo Fuente Hemmingway Short Story, Arturo Fuente Curly Head Deluxe, Gran Habano #5 rothchild or robusto, Partaga Black Maximo, La Aroma De Cuba Corona Minor. Those are at the top of my mind when favorites are brought up. One of those with an 18yr Scotch or a Pepsi. For some strange reason Pepsi with a cigar has always gone well together.

La Flor Dominicana Air Bender (wedge) or Padron Serie 1926 when I feel like treating myself.

Have a local cigar store (Cigar Haven, Indianapolis) with a lady owner, who really knows her cigars, I've gotten dozens of good cigar recommendations from her over the years.

Oliva Serie O is a great schmoke. Its the only one so far that I manage to keep a supply of in my humidor.I usually buy 4 or 5 different cigars at a time to keep a good variety.By the way a Pelican 1060 case makes a great humidor.Keeps the stogies waterproof while camping in an open top Jeep in rainy Washington.

If I can't get my hands on a Cohiba or Montecristo, then I go for Baccarat Rothschilds, Padrons Delicias, C&G robustos, Don Tomas El Presidentes, or Hoyo de Monterrey Excaliburs.

Of course, sometimes, especially when you're in an austere region, even a decent "second" or "factory throwout" will more than suffice:

Rocky Patel Edge - I found one that was the blackest maduro I'd ever smoked, and it was awesome!

Don Diego, JR Ultimate, Monte Cristo White are a few of my favorites.

I do find it hard to pass up a good buy though. I bought an Ammo Can of La Fincas a while back. JR Cigars took a bunch of ammo cans, cleaned them up and lined them and then stuffed it full of La Finca Toros. It holds 91 of them and it went for about $85. They're pretty good smokes for the price.

Not all machine mades are created equal. I keep a supply of JR Famous cigars on hand as my every day smokes. The short version of their backstory is that Lew Rothman of JR Cigars was at the General Cigar factory watching them make premium cigars. They were sweeping the table cuttings onto the floor and then the table cuttings would get swept out the back door and burned. Rothman suggested that the table cuttings could be run through the machine made process and said that he would put his band on all of them General could produce. What you get is premium cigar tobacco wrapped in a homogenized tobacco leaf (looks like paper) and then finished off with a real wrapper. A pretty decent smoke for not much money. But it's not a Don Diego either.

I know nothing about cigars. I used to smoke the Sweets until I quit smoking cold turkey back in 1979.
I would like to try a smaller diameter cigar kinda like what Clint Eastwood had in his westerns. This will be smoked in celebration of my first SI class in October(unless funding presents itself for more than one class this year).
I don't think I need to worry about starting up again as it takes funds away from guns and ammo and training.
I don't like a harsh cigar, more of something a little sweet that would go well with a cold brew or Canadian Mist or Jack.

What say you?

5 Vegas Gold. That and Excalibur 1066. Certainly my two favorites. If I had to pick a third, Onyx Reserve. And all very affordable. I've had, and have several cubans in my humidor. Some of them are nothing short of FABULOUS. But most of them are not as good as the three I listed above, and way more trouble to get.

I have a footlocker sized humidor with electronically controlled humidification that I've been trying to get rid of for months. (Too many humidors).

I should try to sell it on the board here.......

No offense meant, but I really feel Cohiba are way overpriced. There are hundreds of cigars that are better smokes for half the price. I am not saying you are a novice, but most novice smokers immediately go for the Cohiba and its the wrong choice for sure. Not to say they are all bad smokes, but just overpriced.

Five years ago, for about a year, I was really into cigars. Now I just smoke 'em occasionally with friends. Did not need yet another obsession...

The Cuban Cohiba is a great cigar, but too "fuerte" for my candy-ass taste. I don't like the Dominican version at all, and agree - it's way over-priced! I much prefer medium-bodied Romeo y Julietas and Partagas. The Cuban versions are great, but the Dominican are excellent as well.

If any of you is ever in Europe, check out the Davidoff Cuban Line of product - pricey, but primo quality! BTW, not to suggest anything illegal or immoral here, but they never really check for cigars when you're flying in from Europe...

Maybe I need to try more, but the best cigar I've ever smoked is a Rocky Patel Decade. I like them better than Opus X or Padron 1926. A. Fuente Hemmingway's and Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 are also excellent choices. They're good with a glass of Jameson 1780 on the rocks. That's how to relax.

I've never had a cigar I didn't like but I've only had a few. Even if it's a 2 dollar black and mild from the convenience store or a $5 cuban round. I don't smoke often just out of not making it a habit and not having the money but for a good party with the boys or just an occasional mini celebration I'll take whatever. The best I ever had I didn't buy personally but my friend smoked half of and didn't want it anymore - I believe it was a cigar made elsewhere with cuban tobacco seeds, it was great.

Would love to buy a box of cigars someday, I've been working hard lately but that would be a lot of money gone pretty quick hehe. Maybe next time I'm near a smoke shop I'll pick up a cigar I've never tried.

Anyone here into the pipe? I was considering doing that someday, I hear the tobacco for them is very inexpensive.

Two things:

1. Although it is legal for the hadjis to sell 'em, it's still illegal for Americans to buy 'em under Cuban Assets Control Regulations, 31 C.F.R. Part 515.

2. I'm about 98% sure those are counterfeit, as 98% of Cohibas not purchased from Habanos S.A. are counterfeit.

There are a lot of counterfeits out there, and one has to be rather careful. The best way that I know of in getting a real cuban is getting it right from the source, but that gets risky. Fun, but risky.

Fuente Fuente OpusX - in fact just about anything from Arturo Fuente is an excellent cigar

And yes I have to agree with Yoni - Cuban Romeo y Julietta or Montecristo but they are hard to find in the US.

Now I have to say I don't smoke anymore and when I did, all I smoked was cigars. Got really expensive and I used to inhale, not good on the lungs, that is why I like the more smoother creamy smokes.

So with that said, my new vice is guns and now I lean towards the smell of smoking gun. Yea, I have to admit that I will take a puff from my freshly fired Glock now and then.

I just picked up a box of Berings that are 6X43. They're tasty but as you point out, I can't help but think they'd be better in a 50 ring gauge. If you get much bigger than a 50 I believe you reach a point of diminishing returns and they start to lose something.

I also got a bundle of Te Amo New York Maduros in a 5X50. They are surprisingly smooth with a hint of sweetness. Not at all what I expected from a Mexican Maduro.

Comin in late to this thread but Im a big fan of anything from Nicaragua. JdN are my favorite and my go to stick. Don Pepin makes a killer smoke (closest to a Cuban) but I have had issues with construction...hard draw uneven burn on some etc. JdN has been rock solid. Rocky makes a fine smoke and you cant go wrong with anything from him. Anything from Padron is golden as well. A Fuente makes some good stuff but it falls behind the previous mentioned in my opinion. Not bad just a different product that isn't my bag. The Sun grown chateau Fuente is VG.

I have dabbled in ISOMs (Island south of Miami) and to me they aren't worth the premium. For the price of a legit Cohiba (and the hassle to get your fingers locked around one) you can get a fist full of quality non-ISOMs. Not a fair trade to me. I do have a little stash that I dip into on special occasions but its more symbolic than product.

As you guys know, I was born in Cuba. Cuba is (was) to cigars what Switzerland is to watches. Anyway, I recall some of my earliest memories included the aroma of cigars. While my father did not smoke, my uncles and grandfather did and the wood paneled walls of the study in the ranch house smelled of that good cigar and rum that was common in the old country.

I am told that the seed for that tobacco was smuggled to Nicaragua. I do like Nicaraguan cigars, although I don't smoke them regularly....special occasions only. My family owned some good rich tobbacco land near an area called Guanabacoa. As happened to many during that time, the socialists destroyed it all.

The way I look at it, everytime you smoke a good high quality expensive cigar, you are telling every socialist and communist in that country and in this one "muerete maricon come mierda".

Honestly Cubans aren't my preferred smoke - they're good, but no better than a premium hand rolled cigar from most any other country (Dominican, Nicaraguan, etc.), and they usually cost more than an equivalent cigar from another maker. If they were de-regulated and legal for purchase in the US, I probably wouldn't buy them more than once or twice a year.

However, scarcity makes them desirable, so I make a point to pick up a few any time I'm overseas.

This has been my experience as well.

I recently picked up a sampler pack that had five 5 Vegas Gold and five Macanudos. The seller was touting the 5 Vegas as being as good as the Macanudo. The 5 Vegas was ok at best and absolutely no comparison to the Macanudos!

I would be remiss if I didn't put in a plug for my favorite every-day smoke: Rocky Patel 1990 Vintage Seconds. (http://www.cigar.com/cigars/viewcigar.asp?brand=387) At $54.95 per bundle of 15, they come in well under $4 each, and I'd be willing to take the 'Pepsi Challenge' against most $10-15 cigars any day of the week. They're a hell of a good value.

Try the '92 and tell us how it compares to the '90.

I like them both, and usually keep a bundle of each in the humidor at home. It's been a while since I had a 1992 though; all I have on hand right now are the 1990's.

The 1990 is a darker, richer, smoother smoke than the 1992. The 1992 is lighter, but has a bit more 'spice' to it. I prefer the 1990, but they're both very good, and you really can't beat that price when you compare it to full retail. (http://www.cigar.com/cigars/viewcigar.asp?brand=357)

Pro tip: the Vintage Seconds don't have bands on the individual cigars, so if you're going to order some of each, get different sizes so you can tell them apart in your humidor. I always buy 1990's in Toro and 1992's in Torpedo so I know exactly what I'm smoking.

NateR
01-20-2012, 12:50 PM
Another pro tip for anyone who doesn't have a humidor at home, or needs a cheap and easy travel humidor: put 1 Bovida 72% Humi-Pack (http://www.cigarsinternational.com/proddisp.asp?item=M-HUM32-12) in a 1 gallon Ziplock bag with your cigars. No muss, no fuss, and it'll keep your smokes as fresh as the day they were rolled.

I made a humidor out of a cookie tin can, some mesh, and dampened paper towels. And I'll try a vintage 1990 at some time, thank you nateR! I recall the 1992 having a hint of a mint flavor.... Is that what you mean?

So are they good as people say?

I've had them both ways. A cigar will certainly NOT be better because it is from Cuba. But I've had some that were FRIGGIN' FABULOUS. That said, I've had the same experience with cigars from other countries.

I like the 5 Vegas products overall. I think they're pretty good, and consistent. One thing I hate is to have a great cigar, and then buy a box and find that the one was the exception rather than the norm.

Keep at it!

My first tip would be don't inhale if you were inhaling. Second, slow down when smoking. Smoking too fast could give you a big nicotine kick, and also makes the cigar smoke hot, and less enjoyable. Third, have something to drink with some sugar in it when you smoke. I have gone primal, so I prefer tea with some honey or red wine (sometimes port), but I have heard ginger ale works well. The sugar and the ginger will both lessen the effects of the nicotine. Finally, it could also be what you were smoking. The general rule is that the darker the wrapper, the stronger the cigar. I don't always find that to be true. Somebody mentioned the Arturo Fuente Hemingways here. IMO, they are a quite good medium smoke to try, and also widely available. Some other decent mediums would be MonteCristo White, Perdomo 10th Anniversary Champagne, and Arturo Fuente 858. The list is endless, but those are the ones I enjoyed. Macanudo's are very popular, IMO not a terrible smoke but mostly overpriced.

Oh, one other suggestion. A lot of new guys like to go with the larger cigars. I generally prefer the smaller ones (corona, lancero). To me, it seems like the cigar makers cut out some of the filler on the smaller vitolas. It's also a good way to start out if you want to avoid getting sick!

Thanks fro the reply, and what you said goes right along. I went from doing well and enjoying a lighter colored cigar with a very mild strength to a much darker and more richly flavored cigar. Smoked the new one pretty quick, too. Neither brands are very high price wise, but they aren't cheap cat shavings either.

My wife had a good chuckle at her lightweight husband laying on the floor with his head spinning. She has also been a help with learning how to properly smoke a pipe due to experience from her teen years.

I'll keep at it, and just take it easy. My wife enjoys laughing at me anyways.:biglaugh:

Ok, I'm almost done laughing at you. Not completely, but almost.

What kind of cigar was it? What size?

Some good advice has already been given. I'll reiterate, DON'T INHALE! Let the smoke roll around in your mouth a bit and let it back out.

I generally prefer milder cigars. Usually the lighter the wrapper, the milder the cigar. But not always.

I find that I like 50 ring gauge cigars the best. The flavor seems to translate best from this size. If you want something that's a little shorter smoke, smoke a shorter cigar. Try a robusto, usually 5X50.

I have no idea what make it was... But after years of hearing too much of my saying "Cigar smoke stinks." (funny, because I used to say that with a cigarette in hand) my martial arts instructor offered me a cigar (I don't recall the name he gave... Probably has something to do with the other component of the mix discussed shortly) that was Irish Whiskey flavored... I think it was Dominican... Pretty sure it was Dominican. Anyway, mix that with a glass of Jameson to sip on (well... he gave me one to take home too... which meant SEVERAL glasses of Jameson... Probably why I don't remember the name!) and you got something there!

Another good one, not a cigar, but a cigarette is the Nat Sherman Menthol... It used to be called mint because the thing has actual mint crystals in the filter... It's like smoking peppermint candy.

Actually working out hard and consistently for the first time since active duty ('06) because I can't out-shoot the fork, double-edged shaving, good cigars, a transition to more suit-and-tie... y'all are a good influence!

So I ended up going through the humidor and realized I had a diesel crucible with a slightly cracked wrapped so I went with that instead of the hair of the dog. It was a $12 cigar and it certainly lived up to the limited edition title it was given.
Some kind of special and apparently rare Honduran binder and wrapper with the Nicaraguan filler, it was more mellow than the Unholy Cocktail, but slightly spicier and definitely had that "leather" taste you sometimes hear about. I've heard it several times, this is the first time I've really noticed it.
I'd say it's a great cigar for anyone who likes something on the stronger side of medium without being too bold (if that makes any sense).
The Unholy Cocktail remains my personal favorite for the foreseeable future but I think this one bumped the Wicked down a notch.
Sadly they only made 12,000 of them. So get yours now if you want one.

Ther Hair of the Dog can knock you on your ass if you're not accustomed to strong cigars.
