Try a 50/50 mix of Hoegaarden and Framboise Belgian Lambic Raspberry...this is known as a dirty Ho. Since this thread is about whisky....toss in a shot of Feckin Irish......I dub it a dirty Feckin Ho.
Where I come from a gentleman will not drink any drink that has more then two ingredients. And we classify ice as an ingredient!

To whomever called George Dickel a Kentucky whiskey: That's a shooting offense in Tennessee where Dickel is made.
There are two common Tennessee whiskies, and George Dickel is better than Jack Daniels. Prichards is harder to find but also good. Rumor has it that Prichard's brew is what Jack Daniels originally tasted like, when the mash was made with white corn, rather than the yellow corn they use today.

Now we're talking!
I like beer ok and agree with the premise of the beer thread. If I'm going to drink beer I'd rather it actually have some flavor. My theory is that since I don't drink much, I can afford to drink what I like.
My go to Bourbons are Woodford Reserve and Knobb Creek, but I'm always willing to try something new. And they should never be mixed with anything other than maybe some ice on the rare occasion.
I also like Appleton Estates Rum and Cabo Wabo Tequila. Neither of which should be mixed with anything. Just sipped straight!

I tend to gravitate to the Speyside whiskys. The Macallan, Aberlour, or most any of the Glens. Won't turn down a Highland, either. Don't care for the Ilsays or Lowlands. Too smoky, most of them and many (that I have tried, anyway) tend to have that off-putting iodine flavor.

Haven't had a drink of any alcohol since 1991. The only one I really enjoyed was Jack. I had plenty of other whiskeys while in Kentucky, including real moonshine(class by itself??), but Jack always stood out.

Debateable. While i am against tainting the flavors and aromas of finer drinks, the JDs and Jeremiah Weed's need to be cut with something palateable. However, more refined whiskeys are complimented quite well with a splash of distilled water. Helps to bring out the layers of flavor and aromas. But to each his own.
If you like JD Single Barrel, try a new one, called Angel's Envy. It's very good, and I don't like whiskey. It's my future wife's new favorite (old fav. was JD SB).

I enjoyed drinking 'Maker's Mark' with Colombianito in 2008 when I visited him in Tampa. - A good whiskey.
In 2007 I drank 'Knobb Creek' in Colorado with a friend, and that was a fine whiskey, but very strong, and needed a cube of ice to dilute it a little. - Something that I do not do with Irish or Scottish whiskeys.

Anthony.

If you want to try something different, try an Irish single malt "Knappogue Castle"...
Its a vintage single malt, so you buy it by the year...I have a 1992 and 1995...both very good years
Its a light straw color, and not very peaty...
If you are into scotch whisky, try a 10 year old "Isle of Jura"...
And if you are ever in Savannah GA, and want to try various whiskys, visit "Molly MacPherson's Scottish Pub"...

There is a relationship to ones age, ones girlfriends age and the scotch you drink but I have never worked out the precise mathematical formula. I know as a young man starting out, you drink newer scotch and date younger women since you are young yourself and poor. As you get older, so does your scotch as your affluence increases, yet strangely the girlfriend’s age stays young. At this point in your life, your girlfriends age is roughly the same age as your scotch. This mathematical progression seems to continue, with some point emerging on the graph as your income grows where your scotch becomes twice as old as your girlfriend. I spent years researching this concept, but have since settled down before unlocking the exact mathematical formula.

On Saturday I waited in line behind 75+ other bourbon drinkers at the Interbay liquor store in Seattle.Dry Fly released their first,in fact the state of Washington's first bourbon. They sold out 10 minutes after I bought my bottle.
The state just recently relaxed their laws so small batch distillers are able to produce and sell their product. Its a good time to be a bourbon(or vodka, gin,or whisky)drinker in this area.
Anyway, when I pop the bottle open I'll let ya'll know how it is.

To quote the Philosopher Ron White: "I like my whiskey like I like my women. 14 years old and mix up with coke".
Sorry, I had to do it. Can't even blame it on the whiskey as I've been too under the weather to enjoy it.
I'll drink just about anything distilled from grain, the only question is what I have to mix it with to get it down.
Canadian whiskey goes into coke, as does cheap bourbon.
Good bourbon gets a little water. Jim Beam is the border between "cheap" and "good".
Scotch, well, if it's worth the drive to the licquor store it gets a single drop of spring water.
There's a whiskey out there called "Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey" that is, well, Cinnamon flavoured Whiskey. If you make a manhattan with it, and use an orange slice instead of a lime it's *really* tasty. I call it a Burning Manhattan.
The hangover is NOT pleasant though.

Ya don't drink REAL whiskey with Coke!
Anthony
07-28-2012, 01:00 PM
Ya don't drink REAL whiskey with Coke! One shouldn't drink REAL whiskey with anything!
Not even ice.
If one lives in a very hot climate (such as I do,) then stick your bottle of whiskey in the fridge door (NOT the freezer,) to cool it a little, rather than add a cube or two of ice, - which soon melts and dilutes the whiskey with the water that it (the ice,) obviously is.
But anyway, I'm not going to argue taste.
I just offered my opinion.
One can drink one's whiskey however one wishes to, - just don't offer me anything except 'neat' please!
Regards,
Anthony.

Bourbon on the rocks. Two rocks only, but a little bit of melt helps release the flavors. Irish can be quite nice as well, and the peat taste of strong Scotch brings back so many memories of living in Ireland. Jack and its ilk? Tennessee horse piss. We don't hold with that around here. ;) (Then again, my father is from Bardstown, his Scout Master is on the side of the Jim Beam bottle and is the namesake of one of Beam's premium bottles, so I may be somewhat prejudiced.)
My favorite bourbon is Blanton's Single Barrel, my go tos for sipping on occasions that don't call for breaking out a $50 bottle would be Woodford Reserve or Maker's Mark, and my general purpose round the camp fire or toss it in with Coke is Very Old Barton, which in my opinion is quite good for a cheap bourbon.
As far as Irish goes, Tullamore Dew is my favorite, and both Jameson and Bush are quite good. Don't know enough about Scotches to pick one.

On my bucket list, I had "drink an exellent single malt". I bought a bottle of Lagavulin single malt 16 yr, for a friends birthday. It was the most I had ever spent on a bottle of anything.
A couple of weekends ago, when I went to Chicago, I had a glass with him. We only drink it when we visit each other, first thing, with a toast. It is a great tradition.
Lagavulin is expensive, and very smoky/peaty...and quite good. I'm not really a Scotch guy, but hey, you gotta try stuff sometimes. Anyone else a fan?
Brent Yamamoto
08-14-2012, 09:02 AM
Lagavulin is my absolute favorite. It's heavy and smoky, but very, very smooth. I've converted a lot of guys to it. :)
It's expensive and over the last couple years has gotten more so. Worth it in my opinion.
16 year is the one that is usually available. I have also tried a 10 or 12, I don't remember exactly now. It was also very good, if not quite as smooth. The best one I tried was a special 1991 edition. I'm not sure I could tell the difference tasting them separately, but trying it side by side with the 16 year I did think the '91 was better. I haven't seen any of the 1991 in a long while.
After Lagavullin, I think Talisker 10 year is a close second. I am told that Johnny Walker Black has a high % of Talisker in it...if so it may be why I like Johnny Black.
Highland Park 16 yr is a close third, in my opinion.
I like just a drop of water in my scotch, as it does bring out more flavor. The water has to be good though...if it's just the tap I'll take it neat please.

A new one I tried is a canadian rye called Tap 357. Uses maple to age it. No joke, you will think pancakes with maple syrup when you taste it! It definitely isn't something I would like all the time, but paired with a smoked pork dish, it would be quite nice. It is one everyone should try.
